Tohoku Region of Japan

Tohoku is the northern most region of Honshu, encompassing seven prefectures Tohoku, famed for its striking landscapes of volcanoes, mountains, golden rice fields, hot springs, and verdant valleys.

Nature lovers come for the tiny, pine-covered islets of Matsushima Bay, and Lake Towada, a huge crater lake renowned for its bright-blue color and green forests. Shirakami Sanchi Mountain range with virgin forests of beech trees. Some of Japan’s most rugged and desolate coastlines are also a highlight, including Shimokita Hanto, a remote peninsula famed for Fear Mountai Iconic Hirosaki Castle is located in Tohoku, an image of which is instantly recognizable to anyone.

Tohoku’s biggest city is Sendai, site of the Osaki Hachimangu Shinto shrine and ornate Zuihoden, the tomb of feudal lord Date Masamune.

Tohohuku is the perfect place to escape the crowds of more popular destinations in Japan, and also a convenient stopover if traveling to Hokkaido. Several luxury “slow trains” take in the picturesque views en route from Tokyo. The city of Aomori features an annual Nebuta Matsuri, one of Japan’s most lively festivals.
