Taipei, Sept. 4 (CNA) Tropical Storm Peipah developed near Japan’s Okinawa islands early Thursday, the Central Weather Administration (CWA) said, warning of possible disruptions to flights between Taiwan and Japan through Friday.
Peipah, the 15th named storm of the 2025 Pacific typhoon season, was located 1,080 kilometers east-northeast of Taipei at 8 a.m. Thursday, moving north toward Kyushu, Japan, at 26 kph, according to the CWA. The storm had maximum sustained winds of 65 kph and gusts up to 90 kph.
It is forecast to track across Kyushu, Shikoku and Honshu along the Pacific coast of western Japan on Thursday and Friday. The CWA advised travelers to check for possible changes to flight schedules.
In a 9:50 a.m. update, Japan Airlines said no international flights were affected, though some domestic routes to islands south of Kyushu could face disruptions.
Meanwhile, Taiwan’s weather will be mostly sunny to partly cloudy, with isolated showers expected in the Hengchun Peninsula and Kinmen County, the CWA said.
Daytime highs are forecast at 32-35 degrees Celsius across Taiwan and 27-32 degrees in the offshore islands of Penghu, Kinmen and Matsu. Localized thunderstorms are likely in western Taiwan and eastern mountain areas in the afternoon, with heavy rain of over 40 millimeters per hour possible in western mountain regions and nearby areas in the south.
The CWA cautioned the public to be alert for lightning, strong gusts and flash floods often associated with afternoon thunderstorms.
