BEST things to do in takachiho | waterfall views, ryokan & onsens in kumamoto
Hey guys, once again we’ve rented a car in Japan and we’ll be visiting iconic spots and onens around Kyushu. In today’s vlog, we’ll drop by the spectacular Takho Gorge. So, let’s get going. [Music] Oh, give him. On the way to the gorge, we stopped by two roadside stations. These are perfect for a short break after driving for a few hours. You often find clean toilets, a local guide help desk, vending machines, ATMs, and a store selling local produce, souvenirs, and crafts here. We’ve also been to some with a small restaurant or food court inside serving both hot and cold drinks and meals. Most even have unique stamps that you can add to your collection. And if you’re really lucky, some even have showers, an onen foot bath, and a spectacular view of the countryside. First stop of our road trip, Takiho Gorge. This is only about 2 hours away from Kumamoto and it’s an absolutely stunning volcanic canyon. There are two main things to do here. One, hike alongside the gorge or two, rent a boat and row along the river to view Minami Falls up close. And of course, we did both. [Music] [Music] Boat rentals can be pre- booked online for up to 2 weeks before the day of and it set us back about $43. We do recommend booking in advance as slots fill up pretty quick and it’s not guaranteed there’s always free boats available when you get there. With it, you get about a 30-minute boat ride for up to three people. I’ll tell you when there’s people behind you. [Music] Wow. [Music] Yeah. [Music] Okay, look here. Before we knew it, our 30 minutes were up and we struggled our way back to the top. [Music] [Music] [Music] Oh, they also have a stamp at the information center and souvenir shop. [Music] Well, I got [Music] For tonight’s stay, we’ll be at Hokkamura Minami Aso, a Rioan Hotel hybrid located in the southern foothills of Mount Ass. Honestly, it’s quite nice to have space again in our room now that we’re further away from a city center. cold. This place has pretty much all the amenities you’d ever need, including things like washing machines and dryers, unlimited ice, vending machines scattered throughout, and also massage chairs with a view. We’re [Music] after the onen now. And after the onson, we’ll eat dinner. Buffet dinner. Okay, so before dinner, let’s do a quick recap of the onen. Compared to other real cons we’ve been to, this onen was relatively bigger and had both an indoor and outdoor section. I first went in, it was pretty quiet and I had the main indoor onson all to myself. But funnily enough, I closed my eyes for a moment and when I next opened them, I was sandwiched in between two big guys. Guess it didn’t really help that a large group of tourists staying at the Rio Khan had entered the onen in that brief moment. After being bored a little bit in the indoor onen, I stepped out to try the outdoor onen. This tub was about half the size of the indoor one, but it was made of wood instead of tile and stone. It had that rustic Japanese feel to it. I will say that the cool valley breeze mixed with the hot water from the onen was very delightful and relaxing. After a few more minutes, I cleaned myself off and headed back to our room. Retrospectively speaking, the onen seems to be really popular between 5 to 7:00 p.m. just before dinner time. So, if you did want a nice quiet onen experience, I’d recommend going outside of those times. Just from personal experience, onen seems to be quite empty after 10 p.m. So station. [Music] What are these? sushi [Music] for salt station. With our booking, we get both a buffet dinner and breakfast. The buffet was stacked with a variety of dishes. There’s Japanese dishes like tempura, curry, steamed egg, sushi, and soba, and we were also surprised by the unlimited sushimi, which we may or may not use. Salah. There’s also some western options like fried chicken, chips, and salad. [Music] [Music] Of course, there’s also desserts with a pretty extensive range of cakes to choose from, but we reckon the locally harvested strawberries are the highlights here. I don’t even know. I want to make this pretty. I’m going to get a drink. You want a drink? Yeah. [Music] I’m going to try this. [Music] All right. So, I really want to try this. It’s grilled fish. Look at his eyes. So it tastes like this. That’s not good. [Music] Some of it is chamomile. Some of it is some kind of sencha and then some of it is some kind of like ojicha thing and then I put like a dehydrated orange in there so it should be a bit citrusy [Music] flow [Music] ice cream. We got a bunch of probably mango and some sort of pudding. I don’t know what this is. Jelly. Yeah, some sort of jelly. I got the same strawberry spider. [Music] weird jelly ball, I think. Weird texture. Hey guys, we’re at Kyokam Mina Maso Rioan and I bought two51 reprint packs from a convenience store that we uh went through on the way here. So, let’s open them. These were not very cheap compared to the other packs. The other packs are about 180 yen each. This one’s about like 250. But yeah, Pony Fans Cubone. Oh, it’s a Pokeball version. Yeah, Pokeball version of this one. Chance. Hey, that’s pretty sea drop and Pidgey Pot. Got the Pokéball version of this one at least. That’s decent. Second pack. Porygon fourpics. Uh, weeping bell. Oh, nice. Full art. Oh, no. Art rare. Cateropy. Oo. Didn’t like it. Oh, okay. Charza DX. Not playable, but good pull nonetheless. Rigid belt, I think that’s what it’s called. And then go back. We got these three. Hey, bye. [Music] Oh, this tomato juice. My chaotic plate. [Music] [Music] Let’s soak in this view one more time before we head off to our next destination. All right, guys. That’s the end of this vlog, but stay tuned as we have more videos coming out soon. [Music]
Now this isn’t something you can do in many places. Japan never ceases to amaze us with all the bountiful activities that it offers.
Today we’re exploring Takachiho, where the magnificent Takachiho Gorge is located. Here you can rent a boat and ride up to the waterfall, but don’t get too close or you’ll be soaked.
Following this we continue our onsen roadtrip and head towards one that’s nestled inbetween the mountain ranges of Aso.
