(WDBJ) – September 2, 1945:
Japan officially surrendered, bringing an end to World War II.
Japanese representatives signed the official surrender document on board the USS Missouri in a day known as VJ Day, or Victory over Japan Day.
It came around four months after the surrender of Germany in Europe.
Estimates vary, but the National World War II museum in New Orleans says around 60,000,000 people, soldiers and civillians, died during the war.
In the years following surrender, the U.S. and other allies led Japan through political, economic and social reforms.
Gray Media, parent company of WDBJ7, is celebrating the upcoming 250th birthday of the United States of America with a year-long look at our country called “We the People”.
