MIYAJIMA ISLAND Day Trip: How to Visit Miyajima From Hiroshima in a Day

[Music] It’s the perfect day trip from Hiroshima. Welcome to Miaima. [Music] We took the ferry from the mainland at Miaima Guuchi Station across to Miaima. The island is formerly known as Itsukushima. Taking the ferry is really easy because you can tap your Suika card and it’s pretty inexpensive as well. Deer are thought of as sacred in the Shinto religion. These deer have no fear and they’re always trying to steal food from the tourists. The most famous site on the island is the Grand Tour Gate at Itsukushima Shrine. It’s a UNESCO World Heritage site and the view changes throughout the day with the tides. One of our favorite places to visit was Da Shouin. It’s a historic Buddhist temple complex at the base of Mount Misen. To the left of the temple gate is a garden with 500 Rakan statues. Each one represents a Buddhist monk who directly studied from Buddha. They all have different facial expressions and they all wear small knitted hats. These are offerings from visitors in order to keep them warm. Walking up the stairs, there’s a row of spinning metal wheels that are inscribed with Buddhist scriptures. Turning the wheel is thought to provide blessings to those who spin them. Visit the seven figures known as a Mizuk Jizo statues. Use the ladle to pour water over these statues to console the souls of loved ones. Next, walk through Henjokutsu, an incredible cave. The ceiling is completely lined with lanterns, and there are 88 statues representing the 88 temples on the pilgrimage route in Shikoku. This is such a peaceful and reflective place. [Music] Afterwards, it was time to start our hike to the top of Mount Nissan. While there are three trails to reach the top, the trail from Daishoin is the most scenic and a little less steep. With that said, there are many, many stairs. This is about an hour and a half of an uphill hike, climbing up and up the mountain. There are over 2,000 stone steps to the summit, but it’s well worth the adventure, and the views from the top are spectacular. [Music] We noticed many small Buddha statues on our hike, and there are some temple buildings and spiritual sites to check out before getting to the viewpoint at the top. There are many sweeping vistas and an observatory offering 360°ree panoramic views. On a clear day, you can see as far as Hiroshima. When we visited in February, the Miaima ropeway was closed, but when it’s open, one option is to take the ropeway to the top and back down. Some visitors also take the ropeway up and then they hike back down. We really love the challenge of hiking to the top of the mountain. We took a different trail to hike back down to the bottom. [Music] While it’s hard to pick a favorite day from our trip to Japan, our day trip to Miaima was definitely one of our most memorable. If you’re heading to Hiroshima, it’s not to be missed. Here are some must visit places in Miyajima that you can easily do in one day there:

– The famous floating torii gate at Itsukushima Shrine
– Daisho-in Temple and all of its wonders
– Hike to the top of Mount Misen from Daisho-in (or take the Miyajima Ropeway if you only want a small hike)
– See all of the friendly deer (keep any street food protected, they will aggressively try to steal it from you)
