FUKUOKA – A fire broke out aboard a U.S. military vessel off the White Beach navy facility in Uruma, Okinawa Prefecture, on Wednesday afternoon, the Japan Coast Guard said, with no injuries reported.

Vessels from the Self-Defense Forces and other ships were engaged in firefighting operations, the local coast guard office said, adding that the fire was reported by the U.S. military.

No environmental pollution has been found, the coast guard and the U.S. military said.

According to the coast guard, the vessel that caught fire was the New Orleans, a U.S. Navy ship measuring 208.4 meters in length, 32 meters in width and with a gross tonnage of 24,433.

The U.S. military’s Camp Foster reported the fire at around 5 p.m., saying crew members were battling the fire but the coast guard’s help was needed.
