Obon Dance Festival! #japantravel #japanfestival #japan #japanlife

Obon dance festivals are held throughout Japan. This one was in Kobe, but they’ll be wherever you are mid August. The biggest, one that I’ve always wanted to attend, is the Awa Odori Festival in Tokushima Prefecture, held annually from August 12-15. It attracts over 1.3 million visitors, so make sure you have travel and hotel reservations!!

You can get yukata (cotton kimono) for men and women at department stores and specialty kimono shops. For the cheap ones I mentioned, Don Quijote, Aeon, Ito-Yokado and Daie usually offer complete yukata for under 3,000 yen.

Obon Festivals ALWAYS have food and drinks, so go there hungry!

  1. Another tip for guys, look up what a summer jimbei is. Guys can wear the long yukata also, but I prefer the jimbei, which is a kimono top with shorts.
