Day Trip from Tokyo: ATAMI Seaside Onsen Town

[Music] hey guys i’m back and this time we’re in atami which is just an hour train away from tokyo and it’s this beautiful seaside town that’s most famous for its hot springs retro shopping streets and they have tons of good desserts and food and actually this time i’m with my girlfriend yudi and she’s going to help me record today so looking forward to that so right by atami station is hiadoring shopping street and it’s full of just stalls of food drinks souvenirs snacks and it’s only about 11:00 right now and it’s just full of tourists right now we’re starving so first things we got to do is is eat [Music] so first thing we’re going to get is this fish cake skewer so this store has a bunch of fishcake related things so this is the uh octopus and red pickled ginger one so yeah let’s let’s give it a try pretty good dude and warm it’s not so much like there’s not a lot of like octopus in it but like the fish cake is really good i think it’s a good start to start with something salty and then we can try like some sweet stuff out here [Laughter] [Music] so next on the food bucket list is these onen mangju mangju is like cake with red bean inside so yeah let’s let’s try it’s pretty cute with this um the onsen sign on it first reaction m this is really warm and the ki kos on the red bean it’s not too sweet either so i quite like this pretty [Music] good so atami is so close to the sea so of course the the seafood must be good we got these scallop skewers i’m going to try them it smells pretty salty already check that out all right let me try these scallops i think especially cuz we just had something sweet i think having something salty just hits hits the spot hella good hella good [Music] [Music] all right so we got this strawberry pink soft syrup m wait it’s super strawberry i think the the line the line wasn’t even bad just like five minutes especially like all the salty food we just ate like this this salty sweet salty sweet combo really working i like the vine e oh excuse my language dang i haven’t been to the ocean in forever [Music] [Applause] [Applause] the line is so much shorter here [Music] oh we have the famous atami pudding and they actually have two branches one is near atame station and the other is in the ginsza shopping street and the ginsa shopping street location has like pretty much no line we only waited like 5 minutes even uh but we saw the other line at the pudding at the first store and it looked like at least 30 minutes to an hour just for pudding but i mean just for pudding i mean it’s probably hella good let’s try uh what the what the hype is all about for this pudding got to got to do this in one take otherwise there’s not going to be any more pudding [Music] left i forgot to this is the caramel one and first bite it’s so sweet you can really taste the caramel really creamy and super silky so even though it’s pretty sweet it’s good [Music] goodbye goodbye all right so second flavor we got is the matcha one i think there’s a bunch of flavors here but you know love my matcha whoa there’s a lot of matcha in this actually it’s really good i quite like matcha so i think if you’re a matcha fan this is probably the one to get which one did you like definitely i prefer this one to the original one because i think the original one was kind of sweet it had a lot of caramel but the matcha one is just has the silky texture of like the original one but has the flavor of matcha you’re hella laughing at me right now oh my teeth turned green hell embarrassed yeah [Music] [Music] done now after 10 15 minutes about that’s yeah yeah yeah onsen tamago these are um eggs cooked in sulfur steam or hot spring onen water hope they’re good i’m getting cooked let’s try these onen cooked eggs m pretty good i mean i don’t really taste much difference from a normal egg but still a solid egg i guess there’s a limit to how good eggs can be but it was pretty a fun experience to cook [Music] it all right so we’re at the itawa proomenade which is this river walkway here in atami that has tons of sakura blooming these are actually a special type of sakura called a kamazu sakura which actually bloom in february so i think we’re catching the tail end of the sakura season here in atami at least so uh it’s not too crowded but i still feel like it’s quite in bloom feel like timing is good right now and just going to take a stroll and the pinkness [Music] [Music] [Music] [Music] places thank you [Music] [Music] all right so we’re at atami castle which is just a short rope ride away unfortunately this time we’re not going to go inside the castle but we will just kind of just walk around there’s like a nice park a nice view of the ocean and seems like a good place to chill right now so going to just check out the area [Music] [Music] [Music] [Music] [Music] all right so the doan has come with some dinner uh we have some sashimi some other japanese side dishes so it’s got to start with the sashimi m it’s pretty fresh i don’t know what else to say it’s good oh look at the texture of that almost like pudding but machamish is like steamed custard egg but let’s try how it let’s see how it tastes m it’s really good actually [Music] all right let’s try the shu is it hot oh my god it was really good [Music] the last meal is um what what just i think okay you take the last meal of the course is which is probably similar to red snapper if i had to say let’s try it moist looks pretty tender mhm check out this uh piece of the fish meat oh m really good and this oh shoot my chopstick skills my chopstick skills obviously need some work it was really good tofu i’m running out of reactions guys i don’t know no you’re just drunk whoa whoa whoa my mom’s watching it i’m fine plum plum i mean oh yeah i’m kind of nervous i kind of don’t like plums that much oh no let me let me try it he said it’s supposed to be sweeter than the regular plum girl plum i don’t know if i’m supposed to eat this whole way cut the tape cut the [Music] tape got a creaky door so one of the amenities in this lukan is the open air bath so you can enjoy the hot spring under the cool breeze of the outside uh but this content is not going to be for free so uh sorry guys i’ll see you next time

Atami is a seaside city in Shizuoka Prefecture southwest of Tokyo. It is most popular for its onsen hot springs and traditional Japanese inns (ryokan). Being only about a hour away by Tokyo via Shinkansen (bullet train) or JR Odoriko Limited Express Train, its easy access makes it a popular tourist destination for a breathe of fresh (ocean) air from the hustle and bustle of Tokyo.
