KURASHIKI, JAPAN Travel Guide | Happy Trip

Kurashiki is known for its beautifully preserved canal district, lined with traditional storehouses and for being
the birthplace of denim production in Japan. It’s an excellent day trip destination from Okayama City. Kurashiki Station is just a 15-minute train ride
from Okayama Station. Let’s take a look at what Kurashiki has to offer. Upon arrival at Kurashiki station, follow this
route that leads to a covered shopping arcade to reach the Bikan Historical Quarter. The street is lined with diverse shops, such as dining establishments and clothing stores. Make sure to visit this Bizen ware store, established in 1935, which is believed to be the oldest Bizen ware shop in Kurashiki. Bizen ware, a type of traditional Japanese pottery, has been crafted for over a thousand years. It’s renowned for its distinctive and rustic appearance. You can explore numerous Bizen ware shops in this area. The Kurashiki Bikan Historical Quarter is the heart of the city’s cultural and architectural charm. During the Edo period, the area prospered as a center of rice distribution and commerce, thanks to the Kurashiki River which allowed boats to easily navigate the merchant district. The district retains its original atmosphere with white-plastered buildings and black-tiled roofs. The surroundings have no electric poles in order
to preserve the Meiji period atmosphere. You can enjoy a traditional boat ride and explore the Kurashiki River, a favorite activity among tourists. Boat tickets are available for purchase only on the day of your visit at the Tourist Information Center. The area features small museums, souvenir shops, cafés and galleries housed in preserved homes and storehouses. You’ll also come across shops selling character-themed denim and locally crafted outfits. Originally a textile factory from the Meiji era, Ivy Square has been transformed into a cultural complex featuring red-brick buildings covered in ivy. Today, it houses a hotel, shops and a museum. It’s a peaceful place to stroll, rest and enjoy the blend of Western industrial architecture and local heritage. Thanks for watching and we’ll see you on our next video.

A peaceful town in Okayama, Kurashiki is often called Japan’s own Venice for its scenic canals and historical ambiance. This Kurashiki travel guide highlights the timeless charm of the Bikan Historical Quarter and its picturesque canal rides.
