On August 8, commencing at 11:45 a.m. for approximately 45 minutes, Mr.ISHIBA Shigeru, Prime Minister of Japan held a summit meeting with H.E. Ms. Dina Ercilia BOLUARTE ZEGARRA, President of the Republic of Peru, who is visiting Japan as an official Guest of Expo 2025 Osaka, Kansai, Japan. Following the meeting, the two leaders witnessed the signing and exchange ceremony of the “Memorandum of Cooperation in the Field of Tourism” and the notes concerning Japan’s provision of fire trucks and water wagons, and held a joint press occasion. After that, commencing at 12:55 p.m. for approximately 50 minutes, a working lunch was held.
 
1. Introduction
(1) Prime Minister Ishiba welcomed President Boluarte on her first visit to Japan and expressed his hope that Expo 2025, Osaka, Kansai, Japan, would provide an opportunity to showcase Peru’s fascinating culture. He also expressed his desire to further strengthen relations with Peru, an important country with which Japan has enjoyed amicable diplomatic relations for over 150 years and which is home to Japanese immigrants and descendants (Nikkei) of approximately 200,000 people that serve as a bridge between the two nations.
(2) In response, President Boluarte, appreciating the warm welcome she received during her visit to Japan, expressed her desire to further deepen bilateral relations between the two leaders in accordance with the Roadmap adopted during Prime Minister Ishiba’s visit to Peru last November. She also expressed her intention to showcase various charms and values of Peru through Peru’s National Day of the Osaka-Kansai Expo, which will be held tomorrow. 

2. Bilateral Relations

(1) Prime Minister Ishiba stated that he would like to promote people-to-people exchanges through the “Memorandum of Cooperation in the Field of Tourism” signed today, as well as defense cooperation based on the memorandum signed between defense authorities in November last year. In the economic area, he conveyed his intention to promote investment by Japanese companies, based on the facts such as the launch of a Public-Private Platform in July of this year aimed at promoting the expansion of Japanese companies into infrastructure-related businesses in Central and South America, including Peru.

(2) President Boluarte expressed that she was pleased that the high-level exchanges continue between the two countries and the cooperation based on the Roadmap is making steady progress, and also expressed her expectations for increased Japanese investment in Peru, promotion of exportation of Japanese food products to Peru and cooperation for Peru’s sustainable development. She also mentioned the importance of the role played by the Nikkei community in Peru in various fields.

(3) Based on the Roadmap, the two leaders shared the view to further deepen cooperation in a wide range of areas, including people-to-people exchanges, defense cooperation, and economy and trade. 

3. Regional Situation and Cooperation in the international arena

(1) The two leaders exchanged views on the international situation including Ukraine and the Middle East, as well as disarmament and non-proliferation, and confirmed that they would further strengthen cooperation in the international arena.

(2) They also exchanged views on the situation in East Asia, such as their policies toward North Korea including on the nuclear and missile issues and the abductions issue. Prime Minister Ishiba asked for the continued understanding and cooperation for the immediate resolution of the abductions issue and gained the support.
