Apparently, it started with “Speed Racer.” My son Michael Plank grew up watching Japanese anime. It fascinated him. He watched it so often, and so intently, that even I knew the story of Speed Racer, his Mach 5 car, his girlfriend Trixie, his little brother Spritle (who had a pet chimpanzee Chim-Chim), his father “Pops” Racer, and his mysterious older brother, Racer X.

This seems to have rubbed off on his oldest child, Madeline Plank. Now a 26-year-old woman, she told me recently that her interest in Japan was sparked at a young age by watching “Speed Racer.”
