Pinpoints | E12 “Theory of Context” | Akagi, Japan | A Retirement Travel Channel

[Music] I have an inquisitive mind. To me, everything starts with context. You’re getting a divorce. What did she do? Your job let you go. What did you do? Your buddy got his ass kicked. What did he do? So, when you come to a 1300-year-old temple like this, you need context. 1300 years ago, Europe was still in the dark ages. The Moors hadn’t civilized them yet. Mississippi and Native America tribes roamed freely across America. Colonizers didn’t show up till 800 years later. The world knows how that worked out. Algebra was discovered, I mean rediscovered. The pyramid builders already knew it. In 400 m, turn left. And when the Africans tried to teach it, they called them sorcerers. A Russian Khazar king converted to Judaism. How did that work out? Ask the Palestinians. And on the African continent, the Ganaan and Swahili empires ruled. Islam was spreading across the continent, and Europeans were showing up on the shores to trade. Ask any black American and we’ll tell you in detail how that worked out. My point is in the 800s the world was in chaos killing each other to figure out who was big fish. Yet on this little island at the base of this little mountain in this little village Japan was in solitude developing the most feared weapon on earth peace. [Music] They figured it out. Those little statues are cute, right?
