Admiral Dinesh K Tripathi, India’s Chief of the Naval Staff, held high-level discussions with Japan’s Defence Minister Gen Nakatani in Tokyo, underscoring stronger defence ties and maritime cooperation during his four-day official visit from July 30 to August 2, 2025.

During their meeting, Admiral Tripathi and Defence Minister Nakatani discussed key areas aimed at enhancing bilateral defence collaboration. The talks emphasised technological cooperation, strengthening partnerships between Indian and Japanese defence industries, and expanding exchanges in naval training and personnel.

Both leaders reaffirmed India and Japan’s shared commitment to addressing emerging regional security challenges, particularly in the Indo-Pacific. Their interaction marked a significant step in advancing strategic and operational synergy between the two countries, highlighting their shared vision for regional stability and security.

In addition to the meeting with Defence Minister Nakatani, Admiral Tripathi visited JMSDF’s advanced Mogami-class frigate, Kumano, showcasing Japan’s next-generation naval capabilities. He received briefings on the frigate’s state-of-the-art stealth features, multi-mission adaptability, and advanced maritime surveillance systems.

The Indian Navy Chief also toured the Japan United Marine Shipyard (JUMS), where he was briefed on Japan’s sophisticated shipbuilding technologies, automation, and industrial expertise. Further, Admiral Tripathi visited JMSDF’s Fleet Headquarters and Maritime Operations Center, gaining insights into Japan’s maritime domain awareness, operational structure, and strategic maritime objectives.

Officials highlighted that Admiral Tripathi’s visit supports the broader “Special Strategic and Global Partnership” between India and Japan, with maritime security remaining a core theme reflecting the deep strategic convergence between the two nations.

Admiral Tripathi will continue his engagements by meeting senior JMSDF commanders at the strategically important Funakoshi JMSDF Base, further enhancing operational collaboration between Indian and Japanese naval forces.

This visit shows the growing naval partnership between India and Japan, focusing on collaborative capabilities, mutual preparedness, and a joint approach to ensuring Indo-Pacific security and stability.
