Japanese police have arrested a man in his 40s on suspicion of attempted murder in Ibaraki Prefecture, northeast of Tokyo.

Police say they were alerted by a report at around 6:10 p.m. on Monday that there was a man carrying a knife-like object and people were covered in blood in the central part of Mito City.

Police made an on-the-spot arrest of the man who was suspected of slashing nearby people on the street.

Fire department officials say four people were injured, two of them seriously. They were reportedly conscious when taken to hospital.

Police and fire department personnel gathered near the crime scene and apparently injured people were receiving treatment.

The incident took place about 700 meters northwest of JR Mito Station. The area is lined with supermarkets, restaurants and condominiums.
