Four-time Grand Slam champion Naomi Osaka announced on Monday that she has parted ways with coach Patrick Mouratoglou after less than a year of working together.
The Japanese star had teamed up with the Frenchman, who has long been the coach of 23-time Grand Slam champion Serena Williams, in September of last year.
After giving birth to her daughter, Osaka did not compete in 2023 and has struggled to maintain consistency since returning to the professional circuit a year ago, currently ranked 49th.
This year, she was eliminated in the first round of the French Open and the third round of Wimbledon.
Most recently, in a highly anticipated match between two of tennis’s most commercially influential and frequently scrutinized young stars, Great Britain’s Emma Raducanu defeated Osaka 6–4, 6–2 at the Washington Open, resulting in another disappointing outcome for the Japanese player.
This encounter marked their first career meeting, where Raducanu showcased a sharp and composed performance to overcome the four-time Grand Slam champion.
A History Of Osaka-Mouratoglou’s Tenure
When Osaka hired Mouratoglou, she hoped the French coach could lead her to the Promised Land. It didn’t happen, and their partnership is now a thing of the past.
“Merci Patrick… it was such a great experience learning from you,” the former world number one shared on X.
Regarding Osaka’s 2025 season, two results stand out – a runner-up finish in Auckland and her first clay title at the WTA 125 (Challenger) tournament in Saint-Malo.
With Mouratoglou gone, it will be interesting to see if Osaka brings in someone new to assist her or decides to go solo for a while.
Today, the former world No. 1 is starting her campaign at the WTA 1000 tournament in Montreal, where she faces world No. 515 Ariana Arseneault. Despite her recent struggles, Osaka enters as the major favourite against the 515th-ranked Canadian.
