TOKYO (Kyodo) — Typhoon Co-may has regained strength off Okinawa since being downgraded to a tropical depression over the weekend, according to Japan’s weather agency.
It is the first time since 2018 that a typhoon overseen by the Japan Meteorological Agency has been redesignated after being downgraded to a tropical depression.
The agency is warning of potential floods and mudslides triggered by heavy rain in the Okinawa region and its vicinity.
As of Monday morning, Typhoon Co-may was located east of Naha, the capital of the southern island prefecture, and advancing westward, according to the agency. The typhoon was redesignated Sunday night.
