Cheaper Than a Hotel! 21-Hour Tokyo Kyusyu Ferry from Fukuoka to Tokyo | Travel Review | State Room

Hi everyone! This is Kokura Station, only 60 km away from Fukuoka! Just 15 mins by Shinkansen, or 40 mins by JR train. Ever tried going to Tokyo by ferry? I took the Kyushu Ferry this time! Come on! Join me on this awesome ferry adventure! Heading to catch the free shuttle bus to the pier now~ Following the signs, you can easily reach the bus station. I got to the bus station in just a 5-minute walk from the JR train station. Friendly reminder: Make sure not to be late! The bus came exactly on time. We’ve arrived at the ferry terminal and are preparing to check in. My boarding pass—the QR code on the top right unlocks your room. The waiting area is divided into various functional sections to meet different needs. I can’t wait to be the first one on board—I’m so excited and thrilled! All staff are in position. Welcome passengers to board. The cabin features a bright, high-ceilinged lobby designed like a boutique hotel. Every deck holds surprises and wonders waiting to be discovered. With 21 hours to spend here, I don’t think I’ll get bored. Let’s head to the deck first and take a look. The guider is still directing vehicles to enter the cabin in an orderly manner. Maybe we should sign our guider up for the next marathon – they’ve clearly been training on the job! 😆 All done! Our voyage begins now. I’m now on the stern deck. The ferry slowly pulls away – goodbye, Kitakyushu! The twinkling lights are the crew’s flashlights, dancing like stars on the waves. I finally chose this room type because the twin bed rooms were already fully booked. The room is on the 5th floor. Let’s go check out my room! Open the door with a QR code—how futuristic!” I’m gonna head to the restaurant and see what delicious foods offering! Late-night dining now available! The restaurant is located at the rear of the 5th deck. All meals throughout the cruise are served here. The restaurant is surrounded by floor-to-ceiling windows. During the day, you can enjoy delicious food paired with stunning views—what a delightful experience! Time to tech-up and master this tablet ordering system! Each tablet has a unique barcode. Simply scan it at payment to automatically generate your bill. The dishes displayed on the screen are currently available for late-night dining. Breakfast, lunch, and dinner menus will vary daily. Good morning! It’s 5:30 AM, the sun has dyed the entire sky crimson—a beautiful day is beginning. On the morning deck, the sea ripples gently, a soft breeze—perfectly relaxed. Let’s begin our cabin discovery journey and what’s waiting on every floor! On the right-hand side of the lobby, There are the Massage Corner, PC Corner, and Smoking Room. To the right of the lobby, There are the public lounge, snack shop, and restaurant. Walk past the cabin corridor to the Forward Saloon at the ferry’s bow—feel the ferry’s graceful strength as it charges ahead. Captain’s view achieved! But lightly veiled by sea kisses on the glass. Returning to the lobby, continuing toward the stern, we reached the scenic corridor leading to the restaurant. Puppy Play Zone • Helicopter Landing Deck Next, Let’s onward to 6 floor for more surprises! The bathhouse on floor 6 has two sections—gentlemen to the right, ladies to the left of the lobby. Japanese Bathing Etiquette: 1 Please take off your shoes and place them on the provided shoe rack. 2 Wash yourself completely at the shower station (sit on the stool and using basin) before getting into the bath. 3 Swimsuits and underwear are prohibited. Do not soak the small towel in the bathwater. Sauna. Wow—this open-air bath (rotenburo露天風呂) is absolutely perfect! The view + bath combo is unreal. In another corner of the lobby is the game room. Insert cash into the exchange machine to get game tokens. These machines seem cool—though I’m more of a spectator than a player! Next to the game room is the conference room, which also doubles as a movie theater. Lastly, let’s check out the 4th floor. As we enter the cabin, this floor is the first area we step into. As a result, you’ll find the front desk and retail stores here, designed for passenger convenience. Coin Locker and Telephone. Luggage storage service is available here. This vintage telephone now stands more as a relic of its era. It might still function—but who would even use it? Here, you can truly immerse yourself in Japan’s iconic instant noodle culture. Desk-top type electric water heater. Nissin Cup Noodle Auto-Vendor. The kids room, infused with nautical elements, offers children a vibrant activity space. Hands down my favorite place! Endless drink options? I’m never leaving. LOL. Note-to-Coin Changer. The lovely crew prepared captain’s uniforms for photo opportunities—capturing an unforgettable moment for everyone. If you only purchase the basic ticket, then this is where you’ll sleep. Let me show you what it looks like. Small but fully equipped—privacy guaranteed, space never feels cramped. A budget-savvy choice! passengers are assigned a fixed berth during check-in, ensuring both personal space and hygiene standards are maintained! The area also features a shared laundry room and public restrooms. You can buy one pack of laundry detergent for 100 yen. Through my cabin window… What price tag could ever capture this ocean vista? For an additional ¥36,000, upgrade to a private stateroom with twin bunk beds. We are currently sailing off Mie Prefecture, approximately in the waters near Nagoya. Time for lunch! After wandering around the ferry’s cabins all morning, my stomach has been growling for a long time. Delicious food paired with a breathtaking view—what a perfect moment! After lunch, bask in the sun and enjoy the sea breeze on the deck. During the restaurant’s non-service hours, light meals and snacks are sold here. The shop on the 4th floor sells many local specialties — let’s go take a look. Only 100 yen gets you 10 minutes of massage. Great value for some quick relief! Use the remote control to customize your massage – choose body areas (full body, shoulders, lower back) and adjust intensity to your preference. Time flies when you’re having fun. After dinner, we’ll be arriving at our destination. The restaurant is open now, and I can’t wait to go enjoy some delicious foods ! Braised wagyu with rice and hamburger steak with rice—so delicious! Look outside! The sun’s almost touching the ocean—the whole sea’s glowing. Best view from the deck! Wow, so this is Mount Fuji! The silhouette looks so graceful from here~ Our ferry has already entered Tokyo Bay and will soon arrive at Yokosuka Port. Everyone is enjoying the peaceful moment, staying relaxed even as the ferry prepares to dock. We’ve arrived at Yokosuka Port—marking the end of our 21-hour voyage. Taking the Tokyo Kyusyu Ferry was my first time using a ferry as transportation in Japan, and the experience was absolutely wonderful. From the moment I stepped onboard, time seemed to slow down—the noise of the outside world faded away, my phone lost signal, and I found myself embracing the tranquility, the peaceful stillness, and the endless ocean views… everything felt perfect.

I chose the Tokyo Kyusyu Ferry departing from Moji Port in Kitakyushu (about a 40-minute JR train ride or 20-minute Shinkansen ride from Hakata Station in Fukuoka). After roughly 21 hours at sea, we arrived at Yokosuka Port (about 1.5 hours by train to Tokyo Station or Haneda Airport).

Ferries in Japan aren’t just a mode of transportation—they’re a unique travel experience. Onboard, you can enjoy local cuisine, various entertainment facilities, and breathtaking views of the Pacific Ocean, including stunning sunrises and sunsets at sea. For road trippers, most ferries allow you to bring your car along, saving costs and enabling one-way itineraries without backtracking. It’s an economical, romantic, and truly special way to experience slow travel in Japan.
