Let’s go. Kyoto is considered the cultural heart of Japan, a city filled with centuries old temples, shrines, geishas, tea houses, and traditions that are still alive today. The best time to visit is from March to May or from October to November when the weather is pleasant, between 15 and 25° C, and the parks are full of cherry blossoms or red leaves. June is the rainiest month, and summer can be hot and humid. Winter can be cold, but often has dry, clear days. Ideally, you should stay at least three full days, but if you can manage four or five, even better. Start your trip by visiting Fushimi Anari Taiisha, one of the most famous spots in Japan with its thousands of red Tory gates. But to reach temples farther out like Kinakuji or Arashyama, you’ll need to use buses, trains, or taxis. There is no Uber in most parts of Japan. But there are local taxi apps and standard taxis which are safe and organized. You don’t need to rent a car to explore Kyoto itself. A great tip is to pick up your rental car right at Osaka or Kai airport, which are the main airports near Kyoto. That way, you avoid spending on taxis or transfers to your hotel.
