The Calm Side of Tokyo You Never Knew – Nakameguro Hidden Gems
Hi and welcome to another day exploring Tokyo. Today we’ll explore two charming neighborhoods: Nakameguro and Daikanyama. Let’s start our walk through the peaceful streets of Nakameguro. We’re just a few minutes from Shibuya, in a quiet residential area full of cafés. One of the most popular cafés here is Onibus Coffee. They make espresso in the traditional way. Intense aroma, in a hidden little oasis between the tracks and city calm. Let’s move on and try a braided croissant. It’s really good—flaky and buttery. Now we continue to one of the nicest spots in the area: Tsutaya Books, where design and culture meet. You’ll find tons of books here. But also a few surprises. Like these cookies in tins… …and even matchboxes. Nakameguro runs along the Meguro River. Walking along the river you’ll find cafés, restaurants, and bookstores. The whole riverside is lined with cherry blossom trees. They’re not blooming now in June, but you’ll find hydrangeas along the way. It must be stunning in spring with the cherry blossoms. All these spots are marked on my interactive map – link in the description. Here’s a small park. They’re mowing the lawn right now. Now let’s head to Daikanyama. It’s nearby—just a short walk or one metro stop away. This area is also super relaxed and full of cafés and restaurants. Perfect for spending a chill half day. At this local bistro, I order a burger with beef, avocado, caramelized onions, and a fried egg. Really tasty and full of high-quality ingredients. This is the only Randy’s Donuts in Tokyo, maybe even Japan. Get ready for a long line. But the matcha donut is so worth it. In this area, there’s an elevated pedestrian walkway—perfect for exploring the surroundings. On this street with several embassies, you’ll find the T-Site complex. It’s home to several bookstores. This is another Tsutaya Books. Every neighborhood has its own, each with a unique vibe. This one has lots of magazines and books on cars and motorcycles. And of course, plenty of other books and mags too. This is one of the biggest Tsutaya Books. Here’s another bookstore… …with sections divided by genre. You’ll also find a big manga section here. Now let’s head to the Kyu Asakura House. If you want to discover places like this, download my guide and experience Tokyo like a local. This used to be the residence of a powerful family. You go in barefoot. It’s a two-story wooden villa. It has a traditional Japanese garden inside. The view is stunning—especially in summer with the lush greenery. It’s a garden carefully designed down to every detail. Entry costs 100 yen. And that’s it for today. See you in the next video!
