Limone sul Garda ~ Italia ~ WALKING TOUR | ๐ DEMASIADO bonito para ser VERDAD! ๐
Hello everyone, dear friends! ๐ค You’re going to love today’s walk, this place looks like something out of a dream! โจ The mountains surrounding Limone sul Garda are part of the Garda Alps, a subregion of the Italian Alps. These mountains provide water through secondary streams, but they are not the main source of the lake. Look how curious this path is to get to the town! ๐ You have to go through the facilities of this hotel! And at night you see people partying! ๐๐ฅณ Yes, friends, this is the official path! ๐ Limone sul Garda is a small town in northern Italy, in the Lombardy region. ๐ Although many think that “Limone” comes from the lemon, the fruit that characterizes the place today, its origin is different: “Limone” comes from the Latin “limes”, which means border, since this area was a natural boundary between territories in Roman times. But over time, the village’s identity became associated with citrus cultivation, thanks to the mild microclimate created by the protection of the mountains and the lake. ๐ If you look closely, you’ll see many tourists and different modes of transport, but this wasn’t always the case… Until the beginning of the 20th century, Limone sul Garda was very difficult to reach. There were no roads and access was only possible by boat or mountain paths, which isolated the village for centuries. โ This changed in 1932 with the opening of the Strada Gardesana Occidentale, a panoramic road that linked the village to the outside world, transforming its economy. Let’s go down to see the beach of Lago di Garda, the largest lake in Italy! ๐๐ This area is carefully maintained, with easy access to the water, showers, green areas, and stunning views of Monte Baldo on the other side of the lake. If this is looking pretty, you haven’t seen the best yet. Don’t miss the interior of the village; it’s like stepping into a postcard! Hello! ๐ Before tourism, Limone lived mainly from fishing, olive growing, and, since the 18th century, from the trade of citrus fruits grown on terraces known as limonaie. Limonaie are stone structures designed to protect the trees from the cold winters. ๐ณโ They used movable windows and irrigation systems that were advanced for their time. Some are preserved and can be visited! ๐ ๐ฎ Limone is also internationally known for a genetic curiosity discovered in the 1970s: Several residents have a mutation in the apolipoprotein A1 Milano, which protects against cardiovascular disease. ๐๐ช This discovery attracted scientists from all over the world and made the village a focus of studies on longevity, health, and genetics in isolated populations. ๐งฌ๐ We have reached the beginning of the town, you will see how the beauty increases as the walk progresses, you will not regret completing this tour! โจ๐๐๐ You cannot miss the lemons in Limone sul Garda! ๐๐โจ This is the shape of Lake Garda! ๐ง It is hot and our dog “Snoopy” wants to bathe, so let’s go! ๐ฆ๐พ As I have already mentioned, Lake Garda is the largest in the country with 370 kmยฒ. And in the Limone area it narrows between mountains, creating an alpine fjord effect that makes it visually unique. ๐ Lake Garda is of glacial origin. During the last ice age, the ice carved the valley that then filled with water, creating this huge lake. ๐ง๐ง In its heyday, Limone exported lemons, oranges, cedars, and grapefruits to Austria and Germany, mainly by boat across the lake. With the arrival of new trade routes, this agricultural model lost value, the population decreased, and the town fell into a period of stagnation. This isolation preserved its original architecture: narrow streets, stone walls, tiled roofs, all perfectly adapted to the sloping topography. To this day, this historic urban structure is one of the town’s main attractions. โจ Right now you’ll see the authenticity I’m talking about…๐๐ฎ๐ Loquats! I love fruit trees! ๐๐๐๐ Let’s delve into the essence of Limone sul Garda! Many tourists only explore the most commercial and crowded parts of Limone, unaware that the most authentic aspects of Limone are hidden in its rustic corners, far from the hustle and bustle. This path leads us to the Church of San Benedetto. It was built in 1691 by architect Andrea Pernici on the remains of a small, earlier Romanesque chapel. The connection between religion and community has always been strong in Limone, as in many mountain villages. Built in the Baroque-Lombard style, the church features a single-nave interior with a barrel vault, decorated with Corinthian pilasters and red marble semi-columns. It’s a gem of Baroque art, housing paintings from over 400 years ago and an antique organ that still plays at some masses. The organ is right up there! ๐ Saint Daniele Comboni, one of Italy’s most important saints and the pride of the town, was baptized here. Daniele Comboni was an Italian missionary, bishop, and saint, born in Limone sul Garda, who dedicated his life to helping those most in need, especially in Central Africa. You can see him in the portrait opposite. As you’ve just seen, the town is large, and the best of the best is waiting for us! Let’s go! ๐๐๐ One of the most traditional festivals is San Giovanni Battista, on June 24th, which includes processions, music, and typical dishes featuring fish from the lake. ๐ The most common fish here is trout, along with “coregone,” a lake fish served grilled, marinated, or in risotto. ๐ฝ๏ธ๐ That man scrubs the street! ๐ฎ๐ Another key local product is Garda extra virgin olive oil. It’s protected by DOP and is grown on ancient terraces that survive in harsh conditions. Limone’s cuisine blends elements from the lake and the mountains: homemade pastas, cheeses, cured meats, along with aromatic herbs that grow in the surrounding area. ๐ There’s one very famous thing that also attracts many to come to Limone sul Garda… ๐๐ Correct! I’m talking about the cycle path suspended over the lake, inaugurated in 2018 as part of the Garda by Bike project. ๐ดโโ๏ธ This section of walkway measures over 2 kilometers and is literally hanging over the water. ๐๐ดโโ๏ธ And it has been designed for pedestrians and cyclists, with safe railings and spectacular views. ๐๐ This is just a fragment of an ambitious plan that aims to connect the entire Lake Garda with a cycle route of over 140 km, promoting sustainable and active tourism. The success was immediate: in the summer months, thousands of people come every day to walk or cycle this section. ๐ดโโ๏ธ๐ดโโ๏ธ๐๐โจ It’s hard to believe this is a lemon! ๐๐คฃ Many visitors base themselves in Limone and take ferries to explore other pretty towns on Lake Garda. ๐ข Waterfront services are an essential part of transportation in the region, and some lines have been operating since the 19th century with restored historic boats. I know what we’ve seen is beautiful! But believe me when I say, the most beautiful part arrives in 4 minutes! ๐ Don’t be curious! ๐๐ A little-known fact is that Italian dictator Benito Mussolini passed through Limone in 1943 during his escape after being liberated by the Nazis. During World War II, Limone avoided direct combat but suffered from shortages, isolation, and many men were forcibly conscripted or fled to the mountains. Already in times of peace, during the 60s and 70s, the tourism boom began. ๐ It was then that many abandoned houses were restored as guesthouses, bars, and small family hotels, giving way to the current town. Limone has about 1,100 inhabitants, but receives more than 1 million visitors a year. In summer, there are more tourists than locals on the streets. A must-try here is the artisanal Limoncello prepared with family recipes from over 200 years ago! ๐ธ๐ Although we opted for a granita and lemon ice cream! ๐ฆ๐จ๐๐ It’s time to see the most beautiful part of Limone sul Garda! We’re entering a real picture postcard! โจ๐โจ By the way, more than an hour ago, the dogs and I accidentally lost my husband while he was filming, but we’ll be reunited soon. See if you can spot me! ๐๐ค Sometimes, if I’m distracted for a moment, he’ll turn down a street and I lose him. ๐
But we usually run into each other in villages! Look, I’m right there in the back! ๐๐ We’re all together now! ๐๐ฅณ This place is my favorite, it feels like stepping into a perfect postcard! ๐ This moment, at the end of June, all the birds on the lake are raising their young, and it’s beautiful to see. ๐ฆ๐ฃ Here people are waiting for the ferry that will take them to visit another village! ๐ขโจ But don’t worry, you’ll soon discover wonderful villages on Lake Garda and you won’t have to wait for a boat in the sun! ๐ Soon you’ll be able to walk with us through the best villages in Garda and other spectacular destinations designed just for you! ๐ฅฐ๐ Now we’ll look for a very unique perspective of Limone sul Garda! ๐ฎ The whole village! โจ๐คฉโจ Caution! I don’t recommend the next path… ๐

โโ๏ธ๐
โโ๏ธ It’s too steep!๐จ We’re almost there! ๐ช๐ฅต ๐๐ฅณ๐ This path leads to many hotels, that’s why a lot of people go up and down.๐จ We’re going back because we have a couple of very nice corners left… ๐ผ๐ธ๐น๐บ๐ท First we’re on our way to the Church of San Rocco! This church is a hidden gem that has spectacular views. ๐ It’s not this way! โ๐คฃ It was built between 1529 and 1536 as a vote of gratitude for the inhabitants who managed to survive the plague epidemic, dedicating it to Saint Roch, patron saint against contagion. ๐ท Its simple faรงade is medieval in style, with a small rose window, two windows, and a stone bench in front of the entrance. On its altar you can recognize Saint Roch by the wound in his thigh and his faithful dog, symbols of protection during the plague. It is one of the most beautiful and lesser-known viewpoints in Limone. โจ๐๐ Are you feeling like visiting Limone sul Garda? ๐ The high season runs from May to September. ๐๐ October is a good month to visit if you are looking for peace and quiet and a pleasant climate, without crowds. If you visit Limone in winter, you will see an almost empty town and daily life at an almost private pace. โ Friends, I would like to know if you already knew this town, and if you have discovered it today … What did you think? ๐ฎ๐ Anyway, if you have made it this far, I want to congratulate you on having completed the walk! ๐๐๐๐๐ค๐๐๐โจ It’s time to say goodbye … But, if you want, we can walk to another destination to continue discovering magical places! ๐๐ท๐ Until the next walk friends! Thank you for being here! ๐๐บ๐ฃ๐ฆ๐ธ๐๐ดโโ๏ธ๐๐ง๐๐๐๐
