KUCHING, July 9: Premier of Sarawak Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg will deliver a keynote address on Thursday (July 10) at the Asia Hydrogen World Conference 2025 in Tokyo, where he will outline Sarawak’s Hydrogen Economy Roadmap and highlight strategic investments in hydrogen technology.

His keynote, titled “Sarawak’s Hydrogen Vision: Catalysing Green Growth for Asean and Beyond”, will centre on the State’s latest green energy strategies, including integrated renewable energy development, public-private partnerships, and hydrogen initiatives spanning from mobility applications to future export potential.

Sarawak is fast emerging as a regional leader in green hydrogen development within Asean, leveraging its abundant hydropower resources, clear energy policies, and growing international collaborations.

According to Sarawak Public Communication Unit (Ukas) news report, the Premier arrived in Tokyo earlier today for a two-day official working visit, accompanied by Sarawak Secretary Datuk Amar Mohamad Abu Bakar Marzuki, Deputy Minister for Energy and Environmental Sustainability Datuk Dr Hazland Abang Hipni, and Deputy Secretary (Economic Planning and Development) Dato Sri Dr Muhammad Abdullah Zaidel.

Their delegation landed at Narita International Airport at 5.25pm local time and was received at the hotel by Malaysian Ambassador to Japan, Dato’ Shahril Effendi Abd Ghany, Deputy Minister for Utilities (Sarawak Energy and PETROS) Dato Ibrahim Baki, and senior Sarawak government officials.

The Premier’s participation at the conference underscores the growing international recognition of Sarawak’s leadership in clean energy transition across Asia.

In addition to the keynote, he will join a high-level panel discussion on harmonising hydrogen policy support across the Asia-Pacific (APAC) region. The panel includes Shinichi Kihara, Director-General of International Carbon Neutral Policy at Japan’s Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry; Osama Melebari, Advisor to Saudi Arabia’s Ministry of Energy; and Dr Tsaiying Lu, Research Fellow at Taiwan’s Institute for Democratic, Societal, and New Technology Research.

The Asia Hydrogen World Conference 2025 convenes global leaders in hydrogen innovation to accelerate the shift toward a clean hydrogen economy in Asia.

Later in the afternoon, the Premier is also scheduled to hold a meeting with representatives from Sumitomo.
