Japan was shaken near Tomakomai, Tomakomai Shi, Hokkaido, by an earthquake of magnitude 5.0 only 8 minutes ago, Japan’s National Research Institute for Earth Science and Disaster Resilience (NIED) reported.
The quake hit at an intermediate depth of 127.60 km beneath the epicenter near Tomakomai, Tomakomai Shi, Hokkaido, Japan, early morning on Tuesday, May 13th, 2025, at 6:33 am local time. The strength of the earthquake may have been tempered by its relative great depth below the surface, which makes it feel weaker in absolute terms. The exact magnitude, epicenter, and depth of the quake might be revised within the next few hours or minutes as seismologists review data and refine their calculations, or as other agencies issue their report.
Towns or cities near the epicenter where the quake might have been felt as very weak shaking include Mukawa (pop. 7,700) located 5 km from the epicenter, Tomakomai (pop. 174,800) 28 km away, Chitose (pop. 98,000) 33 km away, Eniwa (pop. 70,300) 43 km away, Shizunai-furukawacho (pop. 22,400) 47 km away, Kitahiroshima (pop. 58,900) 51 km away, Ebetsu (pop. 134,000) 64 km away, Iwamizawa (pop. 85,100) 67 km away, and Sapporo (pop. 1,973,800) 70 km away.
