Nuclear Energy Agency (NEA) – “Joshikai” returns to Japan for a ninth edition

The NEA will host the ninth NEA International Mentoring Workshop in Japan on 26-27 July 2025. Organised in co-operation with Japan’s Atomic Energy Commission, the event will convene Japanese female high school students to Tsuruga, Fukui Prefecture. The event is supported by: the Kansai Electric Power Company; Hitachi; Chiyoda Technol Corporation; Kurihalant Co., Ltd.; Mitsubishi Heavy Industries; Mitsubishi Electric Corporation; Nihon Kensetsu Kogyo Co., Ltd.; Seika Corporation; and Toshiba Energy Systems & Solutions Corporation.

Embracing the concept of Joshikai (a “girls’ gathering” in Japanese), this immersive workshop aims to boost each student’s confidence through interactive discussions with female leaders in the nuclear sector from Canada, Japan, Korea and the NEA itself. These leaders will share their personal experiences of working in the nuclear field and potential career paths in science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM). The event will also feature guest speeches from leading figures in Japan, a poster session with presentations by young female researchers and an optional site visit to the Nuclear Training Centre (Ohi) managed by the Kansai Electric Power Company.

Countries with plans to increase nuclear energy capacity in the coming decades will need a robust, diverse and skilled workforce. To address the challenges related to capacity building and to improve the gender balance in the nuclear sector, the NEA launched the NEA International Mentoring Workshops initiative in Japan in 2017. By bringing together young girls with accomplished female leaders, these events aim to address doubts, showcase success stories and encourage interested high school students to pursue studies and careers in STEM. To date, 26 such workshops have been held around the world reaching more than 500 mentees.
