8th Japan winter trip series ep 28 | Hakodate’s Famous Motomachi Area
Next to the Kanemore Red Brick Warehouse is the Hakodate Pier Bay Area where the location of the first point of entry to the City is located. In the past Japan practices closed policy where it was not open to the world. No foreigners allowed to set foot in Japan.
When Hakodate open its door via the Kanagawa Convention in 1854 the bay area was the first entry point to Hakodate.
From the bay area i went up the hill to Motomachi famous area via the Daisan Zaka slope. It looks like normal but the gradient is steep and it was really slippery going up.
The motomachi area have 3 of the church different teachings, the anglicans, catholics and russian orthodox. When hakodate was opened to the outside world, lots of merchants and missionaries came to this city
They also spread their religion influence hence lots of churches were built in this area. They choose the motomachi due to its strategic location overseeing the bay and hakodate city.
