Tokyo is the capital of Japan and the most populous city in the country. The greater Tokyo metropolitan area is home to over 37 million people, making it the largest urban area in the world by population. The city functions as Japan’s political, economic, and cultural center, and it’s a major hub for transportation, media, and technology.
Originally a small fishing village called Edo, Tokyo became the imperial capital in 1868. Since then, it’s grown into a massive urban landscape with distinct neighborhoods like Shinjuku, Shibuya, Akihabara, Asakusa, and Harajuku, each with its own look, pace, and atmosphere.
Tokyo is known for its efficient train system, especially the JR Yamanote Line that loops through many of the city’s busiest districts. You’ll find ancient temples and shrines tucked between modern high-rise buildings, along with convenience stores on nearly every block, vending machines everywhere, and a mix of fast-paced street life and quiet residential backstreets.
The city also plays a major role globally, from fashion and pop culture to robotics and public infrastructure. It has hosted the Olympic Games twice, in 1964 and 2021, and is home to institutions like the Tokyo Stock Exchange and the National Diet Building.
For travelers, Tokyo offers an endless list of things to see and do whether it’s visiting historic sites like Sensō-ji Temple in Asakusa, exploring tech and anime culture in Akihabara, shopping in Ginza, walking through the busy streets of Shibuya, or just grabbing a bowl of ramen in a tiny alley shop. It’s a city that can feel overwhelming at first, but it’s incredibly easy to get around thanks to the trains, and every corner has something interesting to discover.
