¿El mejor bus de Japón? Viaje Tokio Osaka en bus JR Dream Relier, ¡de lujo!

Hello, hello everyone, how are you? My name is Ariel Cruz Pizarro, happy to share with you this episode of Ando en Bus, we will see a premium bus on the Tokyo – Osaka route in Japan, the Dream Relier bus service, one of the most luxurious buses in all of Japan, I traveled in the Precious Class cabin, the most luxurious of this bus, we will see that along with the bus terminal at Tokyo station and a little bit of Osaka. The trip is 510 km, about 8 and a half hours of travel, from Tokyo station, passing through Shinjuku and ending at Osaka station. Welcome! Monday, November 25, 2024. I am excited to tell about this trip. I was at the Narita airport, Tokyo, I left my little sister because she was flying to Chile, coming back, that is the Narita Express train that I used to return to Tokyo. And I stayed alone in Japan, alone, alone, alone, like this street where I am, I stayed precisely to learn as much as I could about transportation in Japan, it is a dream come true to be here on vacation, really. At the hotel, they kindly kept my suitcase, I returned the next day, and I walked to Tokyo station, about 1 km on foot. Tokyo Station, JR, Japan Railways, the classic Japanese railways. The streets and several places were already decorated for Christmas, very nice although Japan is not exactly Christian, they see it more as a commercial date. And here is one of the bus terminals in Tokyo. The terminal is at street level, next to the train station. There is a map showing all the information in Japanese and English. There are 9 platforms or boarding places for intercity buses, highway buses, and 10 to 12 are for buses, urban transport buses. There are also screens like in airports. And something distinctive is that each bus has a name and a number, just like the planes and trains here, so mine appears at 11:00 p.m. as Dream Relier 17 (ドリームルリエ 17), heading to Osaka on platform 9. One good thing about this terminal is that the connection to Tokyo station is super easy. These buses are at the south gate on the Yaesu side, which would be the east side. It is the opposite side of the red heritage or historical building, that is the west. JR Expressway Bus Terminal. The bus terminal has offices, ticket office and different services. Something distinctive is that the ticket office sells you tickets for all buses and companies, without distinction, in the same place. There is also current bus information on the screens. There are locker services to store luggage, reservations and payments using transportation cards such as Suica. There was a waiting room where several people were… flying with unicons hahahahaha… waiting, obviously. There are machines to buy drinks or liquids and free bathrooms and toilets. Something important is that buses carry small luggage, 1 suitcase of up to 10 kg. At the ticket offices there are also self-service machines to buy tickets, they are in Japanese but you can change to English, and other languages, I imagine they will be Chinese and Korean. An important distinction is that in front there is another nearby terminal, Tokyo Yaesu, but that serves other private buses, not JR buses. This is Tokyo Station, Yaesu side. That may sound a little strange, but Japan Railways, the Japanese railways, are divided into regional subsidiaries, and in turn, they have bus subsidiaries. So, this terminal we are looking at receives some private buses, but the majority are JR bus services. Our bus is JR, Japanese trains. My platform was number 9, I arrived at 10:00 p.m., I had 1 hour to enjoy seeing the buses and all the things. I was very happy and in the right place, Dream Relier 17 at 23:00 towards Osaka Station. This double-decker bus is called Gran Dream, when I return I will return in one of those, in the panoramic seat, the same trip but with daylight, it was super nice. And the time before us, 10:50 p.m., was an economic service, it is a double-decker bus like the other one, but only with economic seats, that one is called Seishun Eco Dream, Seishun means youth. To enter the buses, check your ticket on your cell phone or you can take it on paper, the ticket comes with a QR code that they scan. And now that he’s leaving, our bus will finally arrive. arrival of the Dream Relier bus 「DREAM Relier(ドリームルリエ)」 has arrived, welcome to our premium bus Tokyo – Osaka, I am the first passenger to board the Dream Relier bus. Up front on the bus are the Precious Class private cabins, and here are the Advance Class seats, in a 3-row configuration, one individual and one pair. At the end of the bus we have a bathroom that we will see when we are traveling. Each seat has curtains. Here you can better see the Advance Class seats, which are an improved version of the Gran Dream seats on the double-decker bus. In my case, I will travel in one of the private cabins, Precious Class on the Dream Relier bus, truly a luxury in every sense, and a dream come true. 11:00 p.m. and my first solo trip in Japan begins, from now on I have to do everything alone, although I don’t know Japanese, I only have the ear to understand some words thanks to too many hours of anime hahaha and Japanese music, and also knowing how to say some short basic phrases in Japanese. Maybe someone would feel afraid, I am very far from home in Chile, I am on another continent, everyone speaks differently, but I had already been in Japan for 3 weeks traveling with Belén, so I was already used to being in Japan, I felt very comfortable, I already knew how to interact with people, and as a tourist Japan is a calm, safe, and friendly country. The Japanese know that you don’t speak Japanese, but they always treated me with cordiality, they tried to understand me, and everything is written in English for the same reason. So no, not afraid, I think my mood is more like the song from Route 26 of Pokemon, from the first games or seasons, a very motivating tune, I have too many things to see and enjoy, my senses were at their peak, enjoying everything, absorbing everything and of course, it is the trip of my life. Since the trip is at night, we won’t see as much landscape, we will see something in Osaka, but in any case it is a super entertaining trip, I am fond of public transportation, and I have the view from otherness, to understand what is so different and special. We are in Shinjuku, 8 km from Tokyo Station. Shinjuku is an icon, we are in the busiest station and place in the world. About 3 and a half million people circulate daily between the train stations, the Shinjuku JR station, another in Keio and another in Odakyu, 3 railway companies that add up to 35 platforms, you have stations on the subway lines and BUSTA Shinjuku, the largest and most important bus terminal in all of Tokyo, which is where we are. There are about 120 bus companies and more than 200 destinations that are connected from here by bus. Considering that the majority of people in Japan move using trains and planes, buses are not the first travel option. BUSTA Shinjuku is elevated. We are in a commercial building, the fourth floor is outdoors and is where the bus terminal is. Floor 1 is the train station, we are above the trains, incredible. From here, we have departure at 23:40. 2D bus cabin, this elegant plaque indicates my location. I recorded this in Shinjuku, while the bus was stopped. We can appreciate the Precious Class cabin and the reclined seat of this Dream Relier bus. Relier is a French word, which means to connect or make ties. Dream Relier then is a very poetic meaning, of what it means to connect cities, but also to connect with dreams. I’m going to connect very well here with my dreams hahahaha. Joking aside, the seat is a super wide seat in Japanese standard, it is comfortable and wonderful and a very nice experience as a passenger, very very pleasant, you can tell that Japan is a vehicle manufacturer. To recline we use this which is like the opening of a car. Did you see that there is a drawing next to it? The legrest has the same mechanism on the other side of the seat. With this, the legrest will be installed. In front of me, I have a wooden wall, ahead there is another cabin, 1D I have a net to store things. And I have coasters or to store bottles. Something interesting is this trunk, which is used to store things, I put my things in there, but it also serves as a leg rest, so you can sleep with your legs stretched out. In Japan, no bus has a completely horizontal recline, 180 degrees, apparently it is a legal issue, but with the recline of this seat, the legrest and the foot box, you can sleep like a bed, extremely comfortable, you feel like you are sleeping lying down. Our seat belt is simple, two points. I have an adjustable pad, I can move it up or down. This is good… Above, there is a button to heat the legrest, the fold-out, and I also have a personal and fully adjustable reading light. On this side, I have this thing that serves as a case, in the past there was an iPad for entertainment, and I have this table that I can unfold, although it is a little stubborn and that’s why I didn’t use it much. I have curtains and some buttons to fasten the curtain, so that there is this feeling of privacy. Above my head, I have the bus light, air conditioning outlet and speakers for the bus announcement. On the side and below is the heating of the bus, the heat comes out from there and you are left with warm legs, super pleasant. Upstairs, I have a space with a net to store bags, in this case my backpack. And the service includes an amenities kit. The most visible is the blanket, which comes with the Japanese name of JR Bus Kanto, the bus subsidiary of the Kanto region, which is where Tokyo is. The blanket is comfortable, and it can’t be seen on camera, but to the touch it is extremely soft, it is super rich, pleasant. Touching her was a pleasure. This kit came with a scarf with the name Dream Relier, the name is already pretty, and the fact that the bus has its own personality with these details seems much nicer to me. Along with the scarf comes a hot mask, but I’ll show you that later. Lastly, on the wall, I have a rack to hang clothes, I used it for a coat. And I have a conventional Japanese electrical outlet, 110 volts, with that I charged the camera batteries, this helped me a lot. There are some things that I didn’t record, but I mention them: the bus has Wi-Fi internet, air conditioning with air purification , and you can ask for slippers. The JR West website, Nishi Nihon, has a summary with the characteristics of each type of seat. Formally, precious passengers like me enjoy 156° degrees of recline and 60 cm wide, for reference the Latin American Lounge Bed seats are 50 cm wide. This Dream Relier bus is a dream bus. We return to Shinjuku then, to our trip, with the line of buses coming in to take passengers, go up to the fourth floor. In Japan, this type of service is called Expressway Buses, or highway buses. And look… this is Shinjuku, a postcard of Tokyo, to think that not only did I see it on this bus, I also walked through these streets, and I got lost in Shinjuku. (the bus driver speaks into the microphone, I don’t have a literal translation) That is the entrance to the JR Shinjuku station, next to it is the Odakyu train station, the train that goes to Hakone. very nice trip. The driver spoke, I cannot translate what he said, but at the same time I understand it: it is a greeting and thanks for choosing the service, then he gives some information about the route, about the next stops. The buses also have a pre-recorded woman’s voice that indicates news and upcoming bus stops. In Shinjuku, as I told you, I got lost a couple of times hahaha. I have good spatial orientation, but Shinjuku is a huge labyrinth with many exits and connections, It’s like those Pokemon teleportation buildings, you enter through a door and end up in another dimension, far from where you planned to be lol. It was fun, but as a tourist, you have to consider that in your connections, Shinjuku can be messy. After Shinjuku, we have a highway trip, a relaxing trip through Japan at night. I smiled, because later I would see the same thing but on the day bus, that will be a very nice adventure that also had me with high expectations. 12:15 pm in Japan, according to the bus clock. 12:15 hours in Chile, but at noon the day before hahaha. This is the night lighting of this premium Japanese bus. incredible about the time change. This is the Dream Relier bus bathroom in an overview. I opened it because I’m going to use it. In height, I am 1.70 meters tall and I am close to the ceiling. We have a mirror. There are sinks. This is soap dispenser, it is foam soap, super rich. And for the faucet, you have to push it up for it to work and water to come out. Next to it there is a toilet paper dispenser and an extra replacement roll. Something interesting is that the bus toilets in Japan receive everything, 1 (liquids), 2 (solids) including paper, you throw it there. To use it, first you have this cleaner dispenser, it is a solution for you to clean the toilet bowl, this is common in Japanese bathrooms. The space to maneuver, however, is quite narrow. This green button is used to flush the toilet. The toilet is Toto, a very famous brand, although it does not have any smart or washlet functions, it does not have a bidet (some buses do). In the bathroom we have air circulation. There is a small sanitary trash can, very small, for sanitary towels for example. We have the explanation of the door lock, and some handrails or handles to hold on to. The door has a subtle trick to open it, you have to press this and it unlocks, otherwise, you will tell the time, like it happened to me when I wanted to enter… it took me a lot to find the lock with the dark bus hahahaha. About 90 km from Tokyo, we entered Ayuzawa Parking Area, or Ayuzawa parking area. The buses in Japan, in something that also happens in Brazil in Latin America, have rest stops, you can get off to stretch your legs, go to the bathroom, buy things to eat. They are places on the road, you see many buses, trucks and parked cars. The driver puts up a sign with the time: 01:15, at that time we leave, you have to be on the bus at that time, it is your responsibility. It’s a 20 minute stop. As I told you, there are bathrooms, for men and women. I don’t need to go because I went on the bus, and that screen indicates the state of the road, if there is snowfall, cuts or accidents. There are the classic vending machines, or self-service machines to buy liquids. They are everywhere. Maybe at this time it’s lonely, but during the day there are businesses open, restaurants, it’s obviously more lively. In Oyama, the closest city, it is 2° Celsius at that time, maybe it is less here because we are up in the mountains hahaha. Even so, with the cold, I still got off, because this was what I expected, I stayed awake to be able to photograph, photograph and record this wonderful Dream Relier bus, it was just in the best place in the parking lot to take photos. I was happy, bundled up like a bear, the parka, the coat, everything… but delighted to be able to appreciate every angle of this wonderful Hino Selega HD. Among all the JR bus companies, there are few Dream Relier buses, this JR Bus Kanto unit has green letters that denote the branch, and the bus that is returning from Osaka to Tokyo that night, which is from JR Bus West, from the Osaka branch, has the JR letters in blue, it is the difference, the operation is joint, it is the most luxurious bus of all the JRs. And this is the overview of the driver’s cabin, that works with relays or posts, another driver takes the bus later, and the access staircase to the Dream Relier bus. The bus is 3.50 meters high, it is high decker or high floor, but it is not that high. So many times watching this bus in videos, I had to photograph myself next to this Dream Relier bus, I am probably the happiest passenger on the trip, I am already a happy person in general, but traveling in Japan on these transports I was mega happy, very very happy. I am very grateful to God, to life, and to you, to everyone who has supported me to live this. really thank you. Arigato gozaimasu hahaha. I left the mask pending, remember? I first met this with Rika and Andrew, my friends from Yokohama, a big greeting in this video. This is super normal in Japan, for me it is a new world. These masks are used to cover the eyes, but they also generate heat of 40° Celsius for about 15 – 20 minutes when you open them. It sounds very hot, but it is not that hot, it is a pleasant heat that serves to relax, some even come with aromas or essences. It’s like having a caress, atatakai (暖かい) in Japanese, it’s warmth, but the good kind. I’m going to sleep now, good night, I’ll share the form with bus information and ticket before we get to Osaka. The Dream Relier bus is a Hino Selega HD bus, Japanese manufacturing, very powerful Hino engine of 450 horsepower (443 hp). In emissions, it meets the Japanese standard of 2010 and 2015, it should be more environmentally friendly than a Euro 6 bus. Unit H677-11401 (677 11 4 01) of JR Bus Kanto is a 2011 bus registered in Tokyo, Adachi, and inside this version of the Dream Relier bus has 4 Precious Class cabins, 14 Advance Class seats, and the bathroom at the end of the bus. I made a fleet table, there are only 4 Dream Relier buses on the JR buses, there is another version with 6 Precious Class cabins and 10 Advance Class seats, when checking tickets, just in February they are using this version. The bus was manufactured by J-Bus, a joint venture of Hino and Isuzu, at the Komatsu city plant. In 2017, on the Tokyo – Osaka route, private companies inaugurated the Dream Sleeper bus, a bus that has only private cabins, the concept is a hotel inside, in a bus. And Willer Express, another private company, launched its Reborn premium bus, with capsule seats. In that context, JR renewed the concept of its most premium buses and Dream Relier was born, but instead of using new buses, they remodeled these 2011 buses. This trip was the beginning of a Super Tour, a full week making long trips one after another to try the best of Japan’s transportation. In the Super Vuelta that I did, I had the opportunity to travel in all 3 and compare them. The Dream Sleeper is somewhat better, more complete, but it is much more expensive and only works for a few days. And the Willer Express Reborn is comfortable, but the seats and aisles are narrow, and the bus does not have a bathroom. The Dream Relier bus is a balanced option, I don’t see any problems with it, I can only say good things about this bus. Youtube is not a scientific article or paper, but I share the bibliography of the file and I am very grateful to all those who publish about the passionate world of transportation. Tickets! This is my Dream Relier bus ticket, from Tokyo Station, south side Yaesu, to Osaka Station of the JR train. It cost $14,500 yen, about 90 thousand Chilean pesos, 95 dollars, around there. I bought the ticket on the Japan Expressway Bus Net website, which is a friendly website, in English, that allows you to buy JR bus services, they always depart and arrive at JR train stations, buses that are easy to use. Booking this bus requires prior work, as there are few Precious Class cabins, you have to buy them well in advance, because they sell out quickly. And this bus runs every day. As a purchasing procedure, you choose your seat, enter your personal information, and upon confirmation, you receive an email so you can confirm the reservation again and make it. Only there, you can pay, we pay from Chile with a Chilean credit card. And when you pay, you download the ticket in PDF and with the QR code you enter the bus. Reservations open 1 month before the trip. I bought 10 minutes after reservations opened, they had already bought 1 of the cabins, and with me, there were 2 available for that night. Advance Class seats were $66, about ⅔ of our ticket, and row 4 had a promotional price of $56. I made a table studying the bus schedules and prices from Tokyo to Osaka, Kyoto and Nara in that month. JR buses have Seishun economy seats, Gran Dream wide seats, and Dream Relier seats. Prices depend on the day and demand, I saw the cheapest one at 4,200 yen, about $28, and the most expensive Precious Class was at 19,000 yen, $125. For comparison, the bullet train or Shinkansen from Tokyo to Shin-Osaka, on Klook, which is easier for a foreigner, has prices close to 14,000 yen or $90 in normal seats, and just over 19,000 yen or $125 in the Green Car, which is the premium car. A gigantic thank you to the members of the channel, to whom they give a Super Thank You, to my dear readers. I am a writer and book editor. If you like what I do, you’ll love my books. In the description of each video there is the link to the Super map, where all the videos are geographically located, this Dream Relier bus will be at the JR bus terminal at Tokyo station. It’s already morning and I’m really very happy on this JR Dream Relier bus, what great happiness. I slept very well, I didn’t even wake up at the other rest stop. I passed by. I slept “raja” as we would say colloquially in Chile. We are arriving at the metropolis of Osaka. The numbers are impressive, Tokyo has 37 million inhabitants in the metropolitan area. And Osaka, depending on how you count it, has another 20 million. Those types of cities… The trip has been super pleasant, but I lacked a file or pictures to tell you something that caught my attention. When I was researching about the bus, I had to read many publications by Japanese fans, technical sheets, press reports and translate, all in Japanese, I had to translate all those things. One fact that caught my attention was the gas emissions. In Tokyo, in Osaka, which are these megalopolises and with many industries, the air is clean, there is no smog. Japanese emissions standards are super strict, it was a job of many years for this society to be able to have clean air and enjoy these skies, the sky in Japan is beautiful. Anyone who has been there knows that it is beautiful. This bus is 2011, 2012, the current standard was the Japanese standard from 2010, but this Hino Selega HD bus complies with the 2015 standard . That raised a question for me: Why worry about complying with a standard that is not yet in force? which is future. It happens that Japan is a manufacturer of cars, buses and trucks for its own market. I think we all know that. So here in Japan, there are super important tax reductions for ecological vehicles, and those ecological vehicles that access these reductions are the ones that meet future emissions standards, and that explains all this, it is a virtuous circle in which manufacturers have to make vehicles that are more ecological than the current norm, the use of clean energy is promoted, Japan is full of hybrid cars, large and small, and in the case of these heavy diesel vehicles, such as buses, they have vehicles that are less polluting. This bus is a box of pleasant and beautiful surprises, and also the beautiful skies that I enjoyed in Japan acquired another meaning. They really have beautiful skies. In Osaka, the bullet train arrives at Shin-Osaka station, or new Osaka, literally, and we will arrive at Osaka station, just Osaka, both are JR. Next to the highway where we are going, there is the Midosuji Line, I don’t know how it is actually called, with its red line trains. It is the busiest subway line in Osaka, which runs through the center, and also passes by Shin-Osaka and Osaka stations, many people… pass by all the important places. Beautiful, what beautiful views we have of the Osaka metro. At times, on the highway we are surrounded by large buildings, and the traffic is also somewhat slow. We crossed a river, there are a couple of bridges in this area that cross rivers, Osaka is a port, it has access to the sea, Tokyo is the same. And we are close to arriving at Osaka station. Osaka is another maze like Shinjuku. Osaka stations and Umeda stations converge, with a network of several subway lines, JR railways, but also trains from other private operators such as Hankyu and Hanshin. That’s even funny, transportation here is so developed, there are so many people in these metropolises, that in addition to the public or main railway, there are private trains that compete fiercely, trains all the time, differentiated services, branch lines, everywhere you look there is a train line, and all of them well connected to each other. About 2 million people daily circulate peacefully through the Osaka and Umeda area in this labyrinth, getting lost here is very natural, it happens. It will happen to everyone at some point. And finally, we have arrived at the JR bus terminal at Osaka Station. Impeccable service on this Dream Relier bus, it was worth saving 5 years to come to Japan to experience this hahaha. At the terminal, I could see some buses. This 1-deck Gran Dream bus has 28 seats, it was going to Kochi, in Shikoku, it is an Isuzu Gala, almost the same as the Hino bus. I had time so I walked around a little bit around Osaka Station, I already knew why I had been here with Belén. I was already in Osaka. The stations of Tokyo and Osaka, although they are busy, are surrounded by skyscrapers, shopping centers, hotels and super elegant areas, that is a pleasure to be here because it invites you to walk, to explore, you are safe and calm, there are many things, places and corners to discover. I was hungry so I looked for a place to have breakfast and I found this wonderful place, it’s inside Osaka station, it cost me 850 yen, it was good and super delicious, filling. Mission accomplished. I firmly believe that life is short, and that you have to enjoy what you can, try to have happy moments. I can only smile, I like to think that my best muscle is the smile and the heart. Thank you for tuning in, God bless you, I hope this video has been something pleasant for you, I invite you to subscribe so you can see the journey that follows, I traveled in the panoramic window of the double-decker bus to Tokyo, how are you going to miss that, right? hahaha bye, you are very well! and thanks for tuning in.

  16. This is a very nice detailed video of your experience. I learn much from your videos about the bus systems. I like how you compare with south America. Im surprised the seats are more narow there!
Even I still get lost in Shinjuku and Osaka 🤣
The warm masks are very good for over night trips. I always bring some back to Canada!

I never understand how bus lines can run with prices exceeding the shinkansen price. There is clearly a market for high end bus service. Maybe the early morning arrival is an incentive 🤔

There are a lot more bi-level buses in Japan than I thought! I saw many in your video, but i have never used them.

A question about Klook, was it good choice to buy shinkansen tickets? I tried klook for Taiwan hsr, but the price was almost the same and other tickets needed to be purchased as a package. Reservation online was easier for me and i paid at the train counter.

Speaking of Taiwan, on the highway bus i used there, the washroom had a height on maybe 150cm 🤣 . I did not like this baños very much 😂

    Have a good weekend Ariel!

  17. Hola como estas? una pregunta ya conozco Japón y pienso volver, los baños de los buses es solo liquido o es liquido y solido? Gracias, saludos desde Buenos Aires
