What’s the Longest Trip You Can Take From Tokyo With ¥1,000?

all right good morning It is about 10:00 a.m here at the iconic Tokyo station and in this video you’ll find out how far I can go from here using just 1,000 yen To give you a little bit of a spoiler alert it’s going to be a pretty long train ride As a train YouTuber I shouldn’t always take the comfortable and luxurious ones A lot of them also take the mentally draining uncomfortable painful and long train journeys as well And this will be the first video where I’ll be trying to do something like that So I already know how far I can go but I wouldn’t be able to get there without using a few train hacks And these train hacks are actually useful for anyone taking trains around the Tokyo area Okay so the first thing I’m going to do is to take a train but I’m not going to take it from Tokyo station I’m going to be going somewhere else instead which leads me to the first train hack a walk because it’s free If the place you want to go to is just one station away I feel like you might as well burn calories and walk It’ll depend on a train line but if it’s one around this like urban Tokyo area feel like it’ll take only 15 to 20 minutes to walk one station So you may be wondering why I’m not taking a train from Tokyo station This little walk will actually help me go further than if I started from there All right I am here at Honda station which is one station away from Tokyo and it took me about 17 minutes to get here And then from here I’ll be taking my first train of this video Now I’ll be taking the K took line Please change your for the So Line local service the Hibian subway lines and the scuba express line The next station is Ni JK 32 All right so I just got off at New Police Station and the next train I’m going to take is the job line I think the train I have to take just came Perfect timing [Music] So I just got off at station and I come here quite often recently for videos Okay so I won’t be using any JR lines for the rest of the video Now I’m going to be transferring to another train company and that is Tobu Railways It’s somewhere over there And this is where my long train journey officially starts Thankfully I have about 20 minutes till my train comes And this is the only time where I can eat So I’m going to be taking advantage of this soba standing Soba restaurant to eat lunch The first train of the Tobu line I’m going to take is this express at 11:05 heading towards Minami Kurihashi What’s going on whatever it [Music] This might be the train I’m going to take It looks different from this one And it says one man train So it shows how low key this train is So yeah we’re here at Minami Kurihashi station and the next train I’m going to take is yeah like how I said is probably this one Uh it’s going so far away but this is heading to Toboniko and it is a oneman train meaning that there’s only a train driver no train conductor This train is leaving at 12:02 p.m It is 11:56 so I have about 6 minutes I always like pressing this [Music] Open So this train is about to stop at Itakura Toyo Daay Station and this challenge should have ended over here if I took the train normally The ride from Kitaenju to here cost 743 yen and going any further would have pushed the total to over 1,000 yen But you might have noticed I didn’t use my IC card to enter the gates for the Tobu line I’m actually using a special ticket today and that’s what’s letting me keep going past this point Heat Heat [Music] I’m not sure what kind of train that is Oh do I have time to look oh no I don’t know what that is What is this train [Music] oh wait It’s a It’s a locomotive Oh dang it We missed I couldn’t really see the front part but I saw like the front car being black and I saw smoke coming out of it So all right So we are here at Shimoy Mai station And the reason why I got off at this train station is to transfer to another train line and that is called the Tobu Kinugawa line It’s going to It’s this train at 1:51 p.m It is 1:32 right now Also I have about 19 minutes [Music] We can just say bye to the Tobuiko line Goodbye Thank you for your service I stayed on this train for about 90 minutes I left Minami Kurihashi at like 12:08 and it is 1:33 So yeah these trains don’t have bathrooms so I have to like hold it in until the station I could technically get off at a station in between but if I do that I won’t be able to go all the way to the ideal destination because the train doesn’t come that often And especially during the summer it’s easy to get dehydrated So finding this balance between drinking water so I don’t get dehydrated but not drinking too much to the point where it makes me want to pee is kind of difficult Says a train is coming Which side is it this side Whoa What the heck it’s Spaceship X [Music] Oh wow It’s like my first time actually seeing inside the cars Oh wow There’s like a bar counter Oh the seats look so comfy [Music] And then is this the Tobu Kinugawa line oh and this one’s leaving Okay so this is the Tobukinog line and this goes all the way to Shin Fuji which is the northernmost train station on the Tobu railways Okay just like how voice over time explained I do have the shareholder ticket for the Tobu railways With this ticket I can go on and off at any Tobu railway station So there are two ways to get this ticket The first way is to actually be a shareholder of Tobu railways but most people won’t do that So the second way which is the most common way people get this is by going to ticket stores that sells this There’s a lot of ticket stores at the Shinjuku West exit side So if I happen to be around there I usually check The price of these tickets changes all the time But for the Tobu railway ticket it’s usually around 650 to 750 yen [Music] Okay We’re here at this station called Kosaguay and it says it’s going to stop for about 9 minutes to let the express train pass by Yeah Look at how retro the sign looks And this part to Wido Square it’s not in Katakana It’s in Hiragana making it a little bit hard to read Oh there it is Okay it’s Liberty It’s the three car Oh my gimmo got messed up Oops Okay I’m going to go back before they leave me here My bag’s inside so that’ll be bad [Music] The next station is Kinugawa onen So we should be able to see some cool views soon [Music] There’s like 20 to 30 people on the car Now there’s only five or six including myself [Music] Oh damn Look at these buildings I heard some of them are actually like abandoned It’s not in use anymore Or like this one Wow That’s a lot of buildings [Music] [Music] Think that’s a cable car too I just saw something over there You see that gap over there that mountain i think that’s a cable car or a ropeway [Music] What is this train [Music] it’s not in service And the track for this platform stops over there The next station is finally the northernmost train station in the Toba railways Shin Fujiada station [Music] We will soon arrive at Chinuara TN8 This is the last stop of this train Oh I got open for the last station too Okay we are here at Shin Fuji station the northernmost train station on the Tobu railway So if I got the ticket for an average price the video will be over because that will be around 1,000 yen But actually I got it for much cheaper So I can go a little bit further down using a different railway The next train I’m going to take is called the Yagan Railways And I’m going to go even more north All right here it is Yagan Railways I was like this box seats Oh the seats look so comfortable There’s even a table You can sit Wow The box seats were cool but the person who was just sitting here got off So might as well try enjoy the front view But it’s kind of hard to do that when there’s just a tunnel And then finally we are out of a tunnel and then the view from here That a dam I think that’s a dam over there The water looks shiny [Music] Yeah how pretty this view is We’re We’re on top We’re high Wait is this the station oh I’m getting off here Okay so this is officially the furthest I can go with a 1,000 yen This train is just going to go to this tunnel Wow I don’t think I’ve been to a train station that’s this close to a tunnel Oh crap it’s so chilly Wow So we are at this train station called Is there a staff here because I bought this ticket but Oh there is a staff Okay All right Here’s the station sign All right This is my current location And if I zoom out like this Yeah we are like at the top of Toigi Prefecture almost at Fukushima Prefecture Look at this This gives you you know peaceful vibes And there’s not much else to do around here I’m over here at Kawaj Yumoto station This is Yeah Okay A lot of hotels a campsite pool a dam Damn there’s like actually a lot of things to do around here Maybe I should come here for vacation Not not for video for but for just vacation in general This seems like a fun place to explore around Or maybe I should make a video Let me know in the comments All right I’ll give you a full breakdown of how I came all the way here to Kawaji Yumoto station So the first thing I did was to walk from Tokyo station to cond Station This is obviously free The second thing I did was to take the JR line from Kanda Station to Kasenju station This was 178 yen The third thing I did was to take the Tobu railway using the stockholder ticket from Kasenju station all the way to Shin Fujiwada station I did say the average price for this ticket is around 650 to 750 yen but I got this ticket for 520 yen It was pretty cheap I think the main reason is because of its expiration date The expiration date for this ticket is June 30th and I bought this at end of May So I think the closer it gets to the expiration date the cheaper the ticket will be because you have less time to use it And finally I took the Yagan railways from Shin Fujiwara station to Kawaji Yumoto station and that was 300 yen I left Tokyo station around 10:00 and I got to this station at 2:52 p.m So it was about a 5hour train journey and the total cost was 998 yen I barely made it Oh and another thing I forgot to point out is the importance of me walking from Tokyo to Kanda Station If I took the train from Tokyo to Kasenju station at cheapest it would have been 29 yen If I did that instead of walking then I wouldn’t have been able to go this far I think the furthest I would have gone was what was it called do you do you kill something so two stations before this one As much as I want to explore around this area since I took 5 hours to get here Unfortunately I can’t for two reasons The first reason is because the train I have to take to go back to Tokyo is coming in about 30 to 40 minutes I don’t want to just like go explore and get lost and miss my train especially since the train over here comes like once every 2 to 3 hours I think The second reason is because it’s peak bear season I heard bears can get pretty active around May and June So I don’t want to like risk it Just chill in the waiting room All right It seems like you can buy the Yagan Railway train goods here I I think I’m gonna get the keychain to station you know just to celebrate myself coming all the way here Okay In Japan it’s not called keychain Wait I don’t think keychain is the right word in English too Wait is it right wait I got to I got to look it up Otherwise I I kind of hope keychain is the right word If not that’ll be pretty embarrassing Is it keyholder or keychain keychain A keychain is right Okay Well what about keyholder okay key holder is I think I hope it is I hope it is I hope it is So I don’t look stupid Okay Okay Okay Okay Key key holder is a was a Oh I’m so safe Okay Japanese people make up their own English and this is one of them You know in the States we’ll call this keychain but in Japan it’s called keyh holder because I have to learn Japanese madeup English here Whenever I talk to my friends from Hawaii I end up using that Then I’m like “Oh wait That’s a Japanese madeup English.” I sometimes forget which word is actually English and which word is an English word Japanese people made up It’s It’s pretty confusing I see light Here it is The limited express train Liberty [Music] Okay I think this will be a good time for me to end the video Hope you enjoyed it Now great and thanks to like this video over here so feel free to check that video out as well I have a lie

How far can you travel in Japan with just ¥1000? In this video, I take on a Japan train challenge to find out exactly how far I can go on local and private railways starting from Tokyo. I start by walking from Tokyo Station to Kanda to save a bit of fare, then hop on a train from Kita-Senju using a Tobu shareholder ticket (株主優待券) to stretch my budget as far as possible.

If I paid the regular base fare, I would’ve only made it to Itakura-Toyodaimai Station—but with the special Tobu stockholder ticket, I was able to keep going through Kinugawa Onsen and even into the Yagan Railway. This is one of the longest train journeys I’ve ever done, and it only cost me ¥998.

Whether you’re planning a budget train trip in Japan, looking for Tobu Railway travel tips, or just want to see some quiet stations in Tochigi Prefecture, this video is for you.

  1. Man please do a video of Kawaji Kashiwaya zone. It looks fantastic. Great video. Do explore this zone and let us know how it went.

  2. i hope you figure out what the steam train with the caboose was, and are able to take it for a ride!! as a kid we would always yell Yaay! when we finally saw the caboose when waiting for the train in our car

  3. There's the same thing in Brazil, related to the madeup english words/terms, 'home office' is the equivalent of 'working from home'

  4. Just to confuse you even more, there is also such a thing in English as a KEY FOB – "a piece of leather or other material to which a key or group of keys is fastened" according to the Cambridge English Dictionary — though it's more commonly used nowadays for those little electronic devices which open car doors remotely. 😉

  5. What a fun trip and great video! When was this shot, it's sad not to have this weather anymore. I want to spend a few days in Kinugawa Onsen area, see tobu world square and relax. This video made me consider spending time in some of the smaller more northern towns instead though.

  6. You should really try coming back and going one extra stop. Yunishigawa Onsen station is super interesting cause not only is it inside a tunnel, but the end of the station goes directly through a hole in the mountain where a large bridge begins. The Spacia trains go there, so perhaps you could combine it with a review of these 😊

  7. How was this trip 5 hours? I'm currently planning my journey in Japan, and according to maps, this should have been like 3-ish hours.
I'm genuinely interested where and why did the difference happen.

  8. Nice video!, I took almost the same route last time i went to Nikko, it's a beautiful landscape, specially just before arriving to Tobu-nikko station.

  9. Challenge idea: travel across all of Japan from the northern tip of Hokkaido to the southern end of Kyushu using only local trains. No express, no Shinkansen!

  10. Hey Tanner, not sure if you looked into these, but since you shoot through glass a lot, you can get a CPL filter for the pocket 3 that will reduce some of the reflections. It's not perfect, but it does help a bit. Wouldn't recommend a cheap one, though.

  11. This was basically a Zatsu Tabi chapter, except you didn't find a hotel to sleep at at the station you reached.

  12. Keyholder doesn't sound all that weird, it's kinda like a literal translation of the french word "porte-clés" which just means keychain 🙂

  13. 12:03 The type number of the train can briefly be seen: MoHa 253 (in katakana). These are former Narita Express sets now used for Limited Express services more generally. They are specifically used on the Nikko and Kinugawa expresses – and given the location, this must be the latter.

  14. Best to stay away from the bears. Watching you get chased around by a pheasant is entertaining, but watching you get chased by a bear would just be horrifying.

  15. Great video. I too face the real problem of hydration in the summer and drinking water and timing things well. It's rough.

  16. Key chain is the use word used… but I really think that key holder would be acceptable, a pity that english is stupid and nonsensical sometimes… LOL (I on the other hand only speak Australian.. a highly butchered version of english!! 🤣)

  17. I went for over 350 km for ¥1678… But ¥1500 of that was green car tickets. The base fare was just Shibuya to Ikebukuro.

Downside: can't get out and walk around along the way.

  18. I traveled on the final bit of your journey, then onwards to the end of the Yagan Railway and on to the Aizu Railway up to Aizuwakamatsu in Fukushima, it's a beautiful journey!

  19. This was fantastic – I can't imagine the complexity of figuring out a journey like this in Tokyo! I'm also in awe of the "door close" buttons, those are so cool. Subscribed!

  20. Note: Ryuokyo station is apparently really nice because you can film the railway from a mountain stream with seasonal foliage; kinda in the middle of nowhere though
