毎年6月に行われる鳥越祭は、東京都台東区・JR浅草橋/都営線蔵前駅周辺で行われる、1350年以上の歴史を誇る東京を代表するお祭りの一つです。最大の見どころは、都内最重量とされる「千貫神輿」。その重さは約4トンにも及び、担ぎ手たちの力強い掛け声とともに氏子地域を渡御します。渡御の列の先頭には、天狗の面をつけた猿田彦や、華やかな衣装の手古舞、五色の旗を持つ子供たちが並び、祭りを一層盛り上げます。日が暮れると、神輿に無数の提灯が灯され、「鳥越の夜祭り」が始まります。クライマックスの宮入では、提灯の灯りが揺れる幻想的な雰囲気の中、担ぎ手たちの熱気は最高潮に。下町の情緒と江戸っ子の心意気が感じられる、活気と感動に満ちたお祭りです。

The Torigoe Festival, held every June in the area around JR Asakusabashi Station and Toei Kuramae Station in Taito Ward, Tokyo, is one of Tokyo’s most famous festivals, boasting a history of over 1,350 years.The biggest highlight is the “Sengan Mikoshi,” the heaviest in Tokyo. It weighs about 4 tons, and is carried through the parishioner area with the powerful shouts of the carriers. At the head of the procession are Sarutahiko wearing a Tengu mask, Tekomai in gorgeous costumes, and children holding five-colored flags, further livening up the festival. When the sun sets, countless lanterns are lit on the mikoshi, and the “Torigoe Night Festival” begins. At the climax, Miyairi, the enthusiasm of the carriers reaches its peak in a fantastic atmosphere of swaying lantern lights. It’s a lively and moving festival where you can feel the atmosphere of the downtown area and the spirit of the Edokko.
