The Fukuoka city government on Wednesday morning completed the repair of a 4-meter-long sinkhole that had emerged in the southwestern Japan city the previous day.

Recovery efforts had been underway after the sinkhole, also measuring about 2 meters in both width and depth, opened across a road and a sidewalk near the city’s busy Tenjin shopping district. No injuries were reported in the incident.

“We carried out landfill work after confirming safety. We are glad to have completed it before the morning rush hour,” said Fukuoka Mayor Soichiro Takashima.

The sinkhole forced the closure of four lanes in the area.
