The Tokyo Bay Grand Fireworks Festival, a summer treat last held in 2015, is returning next year as part of a special commemorative event, the organizer said.
The extravaganza was put on hold as the capital prepared to host the 2020 Summer Olympics because a key area for spectators was taken over to build the Olympic Village.
The spectacle is being brought back to mark the 80th anniversary of Tokyo’s Chuo Ward government, the organizer of the event.
The Tokyo Bay Grand Fireworks Festival had been held each August since 1988 and become a hugely popular summer event. However, it was suspended in 2016 due to the start of work to construct the Tokyo Olympic Village in the Harumi district.
The fireworks over Tokyo Bay will be held against the backdrop of Tokyo’s glittering night skyline.
Chuo Ward will propose a supplementary budget proposal to the June assembly that includes approximately 36 million yen ($250,450) in expenses for preparations for the event during the current fiscal year.
