Matsumae Castle to Hakodate – Best Cherry Blossom Road Trip in Hokkaido | Toya Lake, Goryokaku, Cape

🌸 Join us on a magical spring road trip from Sapporo to Matsumae and Hakodate! 🌸
In this 2-day journey filled with cherry blossoms, coastal drives, and historical heritage, we explore some of the most scenic and culturally rich locations in southern Hokkaido, Japan. 🎌

🕕 Trip Summary:
Our journey began at 6 AM from Sapporo. We drove along the scenic coastal road, with a peaceful morning stop at Lake Toya, where we were lucky to spot a pair of swans swimming together. 🦢

We then headed toward the iconic Matsumae Castle, Japan’s northernmost castle and a famous cherry blossom destination, where the park was in full bloom 🌸. After exploring the beautiful Sakura Garden, we visited Cape Shirakami, the southernmost tip of Hokkaido, to witness panoramic coastal views. 🌊

By evening, we reached Hakodate and experienced the mesmerising night illumination at Goryokaku Park, a historic star-shaped fort turned cherry blossom paradise. ✨

🌧️ The next morning began with rain, but it cleared up just as we reached the Ruins of Matsumae Clan Hekirichi Jinya—a place full of untold stories. Next, we visited Hakodate Park, where the skies finally turned blue. 🌤️

We returned to Goryokaku Park for a picnic-style lunch surrounded by cherry blossoms. Unfortunately, due to long queues, we couldn’t climb the observation tower. As the sun began to set, we wrapped up our trip and headed back to Sapporo with wonderful memories. 💞
