Known for spawning the Power Rangers property, the Japanese Super Sentai franchise has been going strong for decades. This has seen several “Red Rangers” come and go, with the most popular of them all having recently been crowned.
The 2025 “The All Super Sentai Big Poll Results” celebrated the history of the brand as a whole, including the various teams and heroes that have starred over the decades. Ranking across three different categories, this poll was 50 years in the making. However, it was a somewhat more recent character from this long legacy that ended up ranking supreme following the official nationwide vote.

The All Super Sentai Big Poll Results aired in Japan on May 17, 2025, on NHK BS, with several guests appearing from throughout the brand’s storied history. These included Kosei Yuki and Yuzuki Hirakawa, who portrayed Keiichiro Asaka/Patren 1gou and Rita Kaniska/Papillon Ohger in Ohsama Sentai King-Ohger, and Kohei Higuchi, who played Taro Momoi/Don Momotaro in Avataro Sentai Donbrothers. The event celebrated the 50th anniversary of the franchise, which debuted in 1975 with the release of Himitsu Sentai Gorenger. It wouldn’t be a few years later, however, that the official “Super Sentai” branding was born. Despite pulling all the way back from the beginning of the franchise, this poll-based special crowned a somewhat recent #1 hero.
The three categories of the All Super Sentai Big Poll Results were for Series, Robots and Heroes, and the celebration drew over 600,000 votes in total. Winning the Heroes category was Tori Matsuzaka’s Takeru Shiba, aka Shinken Red in Samurai Sentai Shinkenger. This super sentai TV show ran from 2009 to 2010 and was the 33rd entry in the franchise overall. Footage from the show was used to create Power Rangers Samurai, which was the first of the 2010s Power Rangers relaunch shows. Incredibly popular, it utilized elements of a jidaigeki Japanese drama to enhance its cultural samurai themes. Fans congratulated Matsuzaka with messages such as, “Congratulations, Lord!,” reflecting just how popular the character remains among super sentai fans. Shinken Red is ranked as one of the strongest Red Rangers in the Super Sentai franchise.
Besides being the basis for Power Rangers, super sentai as a brand has also been parodied numerous times in mainstream anime and manga, such as Go! Go! Loser Ranger and The Red Ranger Becomes an Adventurer in Another World.
