Hundreds of people have taken part in a clam-digging event on a sandy beach in Hokkaido, northern Japan.
A local tourism association and a fishery cooperative are among the organizers of the “asari” clam gathering in Betsukai Town.
More than 250 people, including children, joined the event on Wednesday. As they dug into the sand with rakes, they found clams up to around 5 centimeters wide.
They are allowed to get a bucket full of the shellfish for roughly 10 dollars.
A visitor in his 70s said asari from Betsukai are big and produce good broth. He also said he will make miso soup using them and steam them with sake.
The asari-digging event will be held through Friday and also on May 27 and 28.
