Lee Sang-deok, head of the Overseas Koreans Agency, visited Osaka, Japan from the 12th to 13th to commemorate the 60th anniversary of the normalization of diplomatic relations between Korea and Japan.

According to the Overseas Korean Administration on the 13th, Commissioner Lee attended the Korea-Japan Friendship Meeting held in Osaka the previous day. The Korea-Japan Friendship Meeting is a 60th anniversary of the normalization of diplomatic relations between Korea and Japan co-hosted by the Central Headquarters of the Korean People’s Association in Japan, the Korea-Japan Friendship Association, and the Korean Federation of Japan. More than 700 people attended the event, including Koreans in Japan and key Japanese political figures.

“The normalization of diplomatic relations between Korea and Japan was a turning point in stipulating and improving the legal status and treatment of Koreans in Japan beyond the establishment of diplomacy between the two countries,” Director Lee said in a congratulatory speech. “The current relationship between Korea and Japan was possible because of the patience and dedication of Koreans in Japan in the process.”

“The Korean Residents’ Office will take the lead in enhancing the rights and interests of Koreans in Japan who connect the two countries and protect the identity of the Republic of Korea, and allowing the next generation of Koreans to live with pride as Koreans,” he said.
