A photo of Hong Kong’s Kowloon Peak went viral recently for its resemblance to the famous Japanese mountain. With the same clear silhouette and white peak, the “Mount Fuji of Hong Kong” does look pretty convincing. Taken at just the right moment, it showed Kowloon Peak as some clouds passed by to create the look of a ‘snow-capped’ peak signature to Mount Fuji. All that’s missing is a convenience store in the foreground.
The original post on Threads quickly went viral, spreading to other social media platforms. The poster wrote that it was taken by their brother-in-law, who called it the “Mount Fuji of Hong Kong”. It continues with “I can’t go back to my hometown for the time being, so I can only hope to quench my thirst here!” It’s a true testament to how much netizens love travelling to Japan, jokingly calling it their ‘hometown’ and looking for a piece of Japan everywhere.
“Mount Fuji of Hong Kong” picture sparks attempts to capture Kowloon Peak
Inspired by the original photo, people have been trying to get the same viral shot. Many visited the spot and even stopped in the middle of the road to take a picture. Some managed to get a similar shot, although many are missing the cloud-capped peak. If you want to try it for yourself, the location is at the junction of Healthy Street East and King’s Road in Quarry Bay.

A similar incident also happened in Thailand last year, comparing a picture of Khao Ok Talu and a 7-Eleven (pictured above) to the famous Lawson photospot at the base of Mount Fuji.
