Trapped in Japan’s Harshest Winter – Aomori
Heat. Heat. [Music] Hi guys, we’re here and next stop in our Japan adventure is Ali. And we’re still finding the courage to go outside cuz if you don’t know, Almi is known for its apples. And there’s a place here near the hotel. We are staying at the APA Almorti Hotel called a factory that has all things you can think of with apple. Literally like apple pie, apple juice that we also tried in the vending machines at the station. And we must say amazing, beautiful. These are the apple juices that we tried. The best one so far is the red one. Uh because this one has a more intense flavor to it, but it’s sweeter. Definitely. So far, how many apples? Like big check. Big big check approved. Snowing like crazy. Snowing like crazy. Yeah. Hopefully we get a nice first look at our money. Wait. If you are new to the channel, welcome. I’m Vasco. And I’m Sarah. And if you like Japan and traveling in general and vlogs and cool experiences, consider subscribing. We quit our jobs and we came all the way to Japan for a full year to discover all it has to offer. So yeah, we’re on the road to reach 1k followers and without you, we can’t do it. So, you know, follow along. Back to the video. [Music] [Music] So, we just survived the snowstorm and I think it’s actually picking up. So, it’s going to be fun to get out of here afterwards. But, we’re here to see the Neva Museum, which is basically a museum that shows you a little bit about the Nevita Festival, which happens in Alami uh during the 2nd to the 7th of August each year. So, it’s a Matsuri festival and it’s giant floats made of washi paper that you can already see a few ones at the entry of the museum behind us. So, you know this is going to be good inside. So, let’s [Music] go. Oh my god. [Music] So they make this with uh washi paper and like uh iron inside and and uh wood. So, it’s super impressive how they can do this in this size and then carry them throughout the streets during the summer, which if you guys don’t know, summer in Japan is hell. So, kudos, extra kudos to them. But like, this is just amazing. The intricacy of the details, like everything. this. It was around 1,300 yen for the two of us. So, it’s definitely a place you should come for [Music] sure. We are actually going to the a factory and the snowstorm is actually getting worse. So I don’t know how we’ll survive but food. [Music] Okay, so after the museum, we still went, as we mentioned, to the a factory. Uh, but almost everything was closing down which made me really sad cuz I wanted to eat an omelette and I couldn’t. Then we actually saw ourselves struggling because all the restaurants, almost every restaurant around closed at like 10:00. Um, so I researched quite a bit and I found a place that closes at like 1:00 a.m. called Jiraa, uh, which isakaya. All the reviews were are great as well, which is always something I look for, including in Tabalog. So I thought, why not? I mean, you almost never go wrong in in Japan as a whole when it comes to food. So we are now waiting for our food and I must say I’m absolutely starving. So, even if it’s not that great, I’m probably going to be like, “Oh my god, this is the best thing [Music] ever.” Okay. Okay. Oh, [Music] she it was an amazing experience. The dinner was absolutely delicious. We definitely recommend the meat here in the omelette as well. The truffle omelette was amazing. The prices are very reasonable. The staff is super super super friendly. So try to speak in Japanese with them as much as you can cuz they are super nice about it. So come here cuz it’s delicious. So see you guys tomorrow. We are going to visit the The oira gorge oas gorge. Yeah. So, see you guys [Music] tomorrow. Second day in Amoi. And what’s uh to do? Well, we actually booked a tour because we wanted to go to Oasi Gorge and Lake Toada, which is pretty far away from Almori. Uh, it doesn’t have a lot of transportation uh in order for you to get there. So, we of course booked a tour on Cl where like basically a chartered taxi takes you there together with a small group. And we’re going to go now. So, let’s go. [Music] [Applause] [Music] [Applause] Hey, we just stopped for lunch at a place called Mishi Noen, I think. Yeah. And we stopped now. It’s like 11 something a.m. But we’re going to have some lunch because it’s looking really cozy though, so it’s fine. [Music] One of the plates or dishes you have to try here is the one Vashka asked, which hasn’t been changed since 1973, and it’s their recommendation. It’s the number one plate eaten here. So, [Music] The oasi gorge oasi oasi gorge. [Music] And this is one of the last points of the um trip Lake Toada. It has a beautiful view. We even have little ducklings swimming around. [Music] So this is a shrine where people come to when they want they their dreams to come true and they pray here and supposedly their dreams will become a reality. [Music] After a full day of exploring, um, the tour went really well. the the store that brought us uh to the station again basically here in Almori and we did a little shopping around went to a Starbucks of course for some coffee and now we discovered a place and near the station that’s a conveyor belt sushi because Walsh wanted to eat some sushi [Music] to wrap up the video and this day. Yeah. And this day. Not the video. This day. This day. This day. Yes. Yes. The the dinner was amazing. This is what you get when you come to Japan. Even a conveyor belt sushi in a station is like top tier. I do not understand in comparison to Portugal. Yeah. Tomorrow we’re going to have a great day as well. We’re going to go to uh the Takayama Inari Shrine, which is quite far from here. So, wish us luck cuz there’s not a lot of information on the internet how to get there. And Google Maps is also not helping. So, hopefully we don’t get lost. My camera is running out of battery. So, Hey, [Music] good morning guys. So, today we woke up to some sad news. Um, we were planning to visit the Takayama Inari Shrine. There was a huge snowstorm storm during the night and basically all the trains were cancelled, completely cancelled for the whole day. I woke up at like 8:00 a.m. uh to check the the Google Maps and and everything was in red, literally. And I was like, “Oh my god, I can’t believe it.” like we still had technically the option of bus but the issue with the buskis is always a very it’s a bigger risk in terms of schedules especially with the amount of snow that we’re having right now I I always think that trains are always the best option and they they are cutting down like some roads as well yesterday we tried to call for a taxi and there were none available in this area so it’s a risk to like catch a bus. Yeah. And get there and then not have a way back. That was the issue. And we were It was a double issue because we had a tour the same as we had yesterday from the Oasic Gorge. We had one for the Takayama Shrine. It was canceled as well. It was cancelled because the amount of people was not reached. Yeah. And it was like a double bumble combo that it really left me a little bit sad. But you know, so we’ll basically explore this area and probably we’ll uh revisit the apple factory. A factory. Yeah. But yeah, you can see the amount of snow on the this building right next to the hotel. It’s ridiculous. [Music] There you [Music] go. Heat. Heat. [Music] If you also want to try the apple pie, you have these the sweets factory here at the um tourist center information called Pam Pam. They have apple pies here as [Music] well. We are now leaving Ali for Akita. Akita. Yeah, it’s about three hours and a half by train. And uh yeah, of course, we can have a stress-free morning because uh the trains are under reduced service because of the uh heavy snow during the night. So hopefully nothing bad happens. Um we’re going to have to take the train like it’s a regular train with all our baggage like so no space for our luggage or anything. So, it’s going to be and we have these like gigantic suitcases. So, let’s pray that Yeah, we have the space for it. I wanted to use Yamato transport, but Vashka doesn’t want to. He wants to carry the bags around. So, I don’t think it’s necessary. It’s just a 2hour uh 2hour trip. So, let’s go. The bag is almost my size. So, he No, we can do it. We We already did it in the past, so we we can do it. [Music] I still don’t know if we can make it to Akita. I’m praying. Stay tuned because if it doesn’t work, we might have to sleep in the station. [Music]
Join us on an unforgettable journey through Aomori, Japan’s northern gem, as we face one of the harshest winters in the country. Despite the snow and freezing winds, we explored the vibrant Nebuta Museum Wa Rasse, discovered cozy local flavors at A-FACTORY, and soaked in creativity at the Towada Art Center. Winter made the landscapes at Oirase Gorge and Lake Towada even more breathtaking, with a peaceful, snow-covered visit to Towada Shrine — and of course, we kept warm with plenty of incredible food along the way.
