A large amount of water overflowed from the road in central Kyoto, possibly caused by an underground pipe burst, and flooded the area in the early morning of April 30.
Security camera footage from around 3:30AM shows that water suddenly started to flow, and within a minute, the road was completely flooded.
The incident was near the Gojo Takakura intersection, and at around 3:30AM, a passer-by called emergency services to report the flooding.
According to the police and other authorities, the asphalt on the south side of the intersection had risen in several places. This caused large amounts of water to overflow from the road and flood the area, including nearby residences.
Local Resident: When I looked outside and saw what looked like a river, I thought for a moment that it had rained heavily, but the weather forecast didn’t show rain, so I thought something had burst. The only thing I can do now is take paid leave and start to put things back to normal.
According to the Kyoto City Water Supply and Sewerage Bureau, the suspected burst pipe was laid about 65 years ago and is believed to have deteriorated due to age.
Restoration work to the site is ongoing.
