A survey by a US research firm shows that hotel room rates in Tokyo have been rising sharply since 2022, when the coronavirus pandemic started to ease.

The survey was conducted by STR, which provides market data on the hotel industry worldwide. It found that rates fell 20 to 30 percent during the pandemic in 2020 and 2021.

STR said the average price was 26,433 yen, or about 185 dollars, in 2024. That was up more than 7,000 yen, or about 50 dollars, from the average in 2019, before the pandemic.

The firm said the 2024 price was the highest since 1996.

STR attributed the rise to an increase in the number of tourists from abroad and strong demand from Japanese tourists who put off overseas travel due to a weak yen.

STR is an affiliate of CoStar Group, a US real estate research firm.
