India and Japan are stepping up efforts to deepen tourism cooperation through targeted initiatives aimed at enhancing connectivity and cultural exchange. During the 4th Joint Working Group (JWG) Meeting on Tourism Cooperation, both nations discussed a range of strategies to boost bilateral tourism, with a particular focus on spiritual and educational travel.
A major highlight was India’s initiative to promote Buddhist heritage sites to attract Japanese tourists, given the shared cultural and spiritual ties between the two countries. Sites like Bodh Gaya, Sarnath, and Kushinagar are being positioned as key destinations for Japanese visitors seeking spiritual enrichment and historical insight.
Another proposal included encouraging student exchange programs to foster early engagement and cultural understanding. Promoting educational travel among Japanese youth is expected to build long-term bridges between the two societies while supporting tourism-related growth.
Improving air connectivity also featured prominently in the dialogue, with both sides recognising the need for more direct and frequent flights. Discussions further emphasised the importance of private sector involvement in developing tourism infrastructure and crafting innovative marketing strategies. These coordinated efforts reflect a shared vision to elevate the tourism partnership between India and Japan to new heights.
