Walk Japan, the pioneer of off-the-beaten-track walking tours across Japan, has announced details of its latest offering, the East Hokkaido Walk, exploring the wildlife-rich countryside of Japan’s sparsely populated northern island.

This beautifully lush region extends to the Okhotsk Sea, home to a Ramsar-registered wetland, active volcanoes, crater lakes, naturally rich forests and crystal-clear rivers. Accommodation in comfortable modern Japanese inns with onsen thermal hot spring baths is complemented with cuisine sourced from local ingredients, which are some of the finest found anywhere in Japan.

Key features of the East Hokkaido Walk include a visit to the Kushiro Shitsugen wetlands, where travelers may spot rare flora and fauna including Hokkaido’s famed red-crowned crane: the tancho. The walk also crosses a variety of terrain, such as Lake Akan-ko and its green marimo algae phenomenon, the active Atosa-Nupuri volcano and its numerous fumaroles, Mashu-ko crater lake and its clear waters, and one of Japan’s last true wilderness and UNESCO World Heritage Site in the The Shiretoko Peninsula.

East Hokkaido Walk departures are scheduled for June, July, September, and October, when the region’s temperate northern climate makes it an ideal destination for walking.

The East Hokkaido Walk is a seven-day, six-night fully guided tour with a maximum group size of 12. Starting in Kushiro and finishing at Memanbetsu airport, the tour follows the path a relaxed pace with daily distances up to 6.8 miles. Prices start from ¥550,000($3,651) per person based on double occupancy.
