I also flew to Japan from New Zealand in Dec 2023 for 3 weeks for the first time ever. I wanted to fly into Haneda as it was closer to central Tokyo but it was such a long flight with connections whereas flying into Narita was a direct flight and much shorter. If you are tired of carrying around your luggage I highly recommend using coin lockers which are everywhere in Japan and come in 3 different sizes. Great for storing stuff, Also look into Yamato Transport which is Japan's leading door to door delivery service company. You can take your luggage there and they can ship it directly to your next hotel, another Yamato outlet, an airport or I believe even a convenience store in another city ready for you to collect once you arrive
I was personally nervous trying it incase it got lost as I was sending all my snow gear away so it was ready for me when I got to Sapporo but I saw so many reliable feedback about Yamato online. They also hold luggage on site.
Also your IC card can also be used in tons of restaurants, fast food places, convenience stores and vending machines.
Hope you all enjoy your trip. I absolutely fell in love with Japan and can't wait to go back 🧡❤
