I prefer local trains to Shinkansen (as a tourist) because you would never get these emotional scenes in a train that travels 300km/h trough tunnels. Hirosaki is a good starting point for tours also along the coast of the Japanese Sea, I suppose ? It is very high on my places I want to see for my 4th trip to Japan. Thank you for this wonderful report!!
