Vegetarian / vegan gyoza can be tricky to find in Japan, because they usually contain pork. There are several branches of Chao Chao Gyoza (in Osaka, Kobe and two in Kyoto), but only this branch has veggie options. It’s the Shijo Kawaramachi branch, which is in downtown Kyoto, right by Kyoto Kawaramachi Station. It’s within walking distance of the river, Gion and Yasaka Shrine, so it’s a convenient location. It’s a small restaurant that’s popular on Happy Cow, so there can be queues in the evening. I’d recommend going at lunchtime or avoiding regular mealtimes. The gyoza are delicious, and there’s a great choice of dipping sauces to go with them. And it’s not expensive at all – excellent value for the quality of the food, which is freshly cooked in front of you.

  1. Chao Chao is a great place, I went to their restaurant that's near Pontocho. It was so good I went back the next day to try some of their other gyoza, including the ice-cream gyoza. Looks like you both had a great time.

  2. Appreciate the video! Been trying to tag most vegan/vegetarian friendly restaurants in Tokyo, Osaka and Kyoto for my trip next month, so these kind of videos are very hepful!

  3. That Chao Chao Gyoza looks so bloody good here! If I had some inside my flat now, I would try some with fried rice and broccoli 🥦 too!

  4. Do you have recommendations for areas to stay in Kyoto? We are looking to do Arashiyama and Nishiki Market at least, but not sure what would be a good part of the city to stay.

  5. We loved Chao Chao Gyoza when we were in Kyoto, highly recommend it, We went early evening and had about a half hour wait but worth it.

  6. Yum!!! Mmmm the potato gyoza looks interesting. The simple Australian in me leans towards using tomato sauce 😁, only for the potato ones. I like tofu skin (as i love inari) and fried tofu, thats my limit with tofu 😃. I also love the sesame seeds, they make so much difference in lifting a simple ingredient/dish up. In Sydney i go to a Ramen shop where they have a Japanese garden salad with a vinaigrette and sesame seeds and it's amazing. Very polite passing on your best wishes to the gentleman who sneezed. Bless you and bless you Amy for more Japan videos, very much appreciated.

  7. Japanese menus are so wonderful, because they're always designed by people who understand the mission. "Look at this delicious food, and tell me the price isn't a steal." Is that a 4 piece karaage for $5? No, it's a 4 piece karaage for like $3 because the exchange rate is so favorable right now. Ding dang.

24 gyoza, plus rice, plus a side, for $7??? That's like a-quarter-a-dumpling! I would die here, tummy ker-sploded full of deliciousness!
