Birds of a feather migrate by the 10,000s in Izumi, Japan. Cranes: Explore & make art!

Birds of a feather stay together, especially in October, more than 10,000 cranes migrate to the Izumi plain from faraway Siberia to spend the winter. The Izumi plain is one of the most noted wintering grounds of cranes. It is one f only a few locations where such a large number of cranes can be seen near human communities.

(See the whole video at my channel!)

Of the 15 species of cranes worldwide, seven species and a hybrid have been recorded at Izumi. The largest wintering population is Hooded Cranes followed by White-naped Cranes.

The cranes breeding habitats are in Russia, Mongolia and China. After cranes leave their breeding grounds, they make several stopovers before arriving at Izumi. The first flock arrives in Izumi around the middle of October; they return north from February to March. The peak of northbound migration is February for White-naped Cranes and March for Hooded Cranes.

The wintering population of cranes has exceeded 10,000 in Izumi in recent years. Furthermore, Izumi is the wintering grounds for 80 to 90 percent of Hooded Cranes and 40 to 50 percent of White-naped Cranes worldwide.

I am also visiting the Hakozaki Hachiman Shrine in Izumi that has a crane theme and cultural significance in Izumi.

On my self-taught journey to art, I’m hoping my experience observing this massively beautiful sight will inspire me to paint and improve my art!
