Did you know that Higashi-Narita Station was once known as Old Narita Airport Station? This hidden stop near Narita International Airport has a fascinating history. Originally named Old Narita International Airport Station, it played a key role in airport access before becoming an overlooked part of Tokyo’s rail network.

In this video, we’ll take a closer look at Higashi-Narita Station, its connection to Old Narita Airport Station, and how it once served as the main station for travelers heading to Narita International Airport. If you love exploring Japan’s lesser-known train stations, this is a must-watch!

  1. I know your channel isn't full on train otaku, but this geeking out on mundane/liminal places/experiences vibe is so cool. you're unique from the other typical JP exploring vlogs. thanks for making these. would love to see more creators like you out there

side question: what JP sites/forums do you find this stuff on? I'd love to practice my reading on those

  2. I know Tanner will succeed because he is unique, humble and funny! Even in a sea full of Japan creators you still stand out just by being yourself

  3. Never been on the Narita express and thus never noticed the abandoned Narita station, but at least I have been on the cancelled Narita Shinkansen line.

  4. by the way, the Keisei 3200 series had just entered service 2 days ago on the Keisei Main Line. You should really check it out!

  5. I love partially abandoned urban locations! They give me such a strange and fascinating feeling, like being in a dream or an old TV show. Good video. That long passageway was cool.

  6. When you turned around and filmed the stairs I had a major nostalgia hit. I first arrived in Japan in May of 1986 and this was the end of the line. On that day and for years afterwards I would climb those stairs and get on the shuttle bus that went through the war-zone style security fence with hundreds of heavily armed police to get to the sole terminal. The opening of the stations under the old and new terminals was a godsend.

  7. Seeing all the train walkways for a good portion of the video, I'm glad that it didn't take 8 exits to leave those liminal spaces.

  8. That is such an interesting train design o.o
As for the station, that's such a weird mix of abandonned yet still somewhat maintained and with power and lights for part of it, this feels pretty weird.

The more of your videos I watch, the more it makes me want to travel again.
I haven't been able to explore all that much since Covid. I did get to go back to where I grew up as a kid, the parc near where I lived, and do a good 1.5km along a small river that goes almost in down town of Nantes (France) and I've gotten to travel back to Switzerland 2 years ago to where I grew up when I was even younger before moving back to France at 5yo. But that's about it really.
It's really making me want to be able to share stuff like that. I do have pics of those places but no videos and granted a lot of that is very "generic" for what you'd find in France but yet every place is so unique and it really makes it worth exploring a bit. I've shown around Nantes to visiting Friends years ago and there's really a lot of history and nice places to check out, even the less obvious stuff often has some story to it.

Anyhow, Keep up the good work!

  9. Speaking of abandoned stations, it would have been nice for you to explore Toyoko line’s Takashimacho station in Yokohama but it looks like they started demolishing it 😢

  10. God, the subway station in Silent Hill 3 looks like a copypaste of Higashi Narita station. That game me an uncanny rush of familiarity in a way that none of the popular liminal spaces ever did.

  11. i've walked down that tunnel to higashi-narita a couple of times, fun fact it's so abandoned they didn't even bother installing phone data antennas down there so you'll get no reception until you reach either end of the tunnel lol

EDIT: when I went there the ticket machines weren't selling platform-only tickets, how did you get yours?

  12. Yo,i only know this exist because jetlag passed by this station as a hiding spot in the Hide and seek japan lol

  13. very cool and informative video. it's always neat to see old unused/abandoned places. I think it's cool they left it open to get through to that one station on the other side. The chairs at the old platform entrance was cool too, like "wait they used to have seats!?" haha

  14. I love your content so much! I'm very into japanese trains and I've been stuck wondering what they said on japanese train videos, so I just enjoyed the footage. You making this about topics I knew but didn't really dig into it because of there being no translation is really interesting and I love it! Keep it up.

  15. I had no idea about this first station. What a long walk they used to have, poor travellers got excercise hauling the luggage.
Excellent video and audio aswell ♥

  16. Amazing video!
I actually went pass this station once, when I wanted to take the Sky Access line but hopped on to a Keisei line train 😂 it was a slow and long ride, but still it was pretty fun

  17. I'd like to see Higashi Narita but it's just too far away and taking the Narita Express or any train just to go there sounds like too much of a pain lmao
