“Spectacular View: Juhyo Zao【 Snow Monsters】 Liszt’s ‘Sighs,’ Piano: Nobuyuki Tsujii.”
★蔵王を世界的に有名にしたのが、スノーモンスター（学術名：アイスモンスター）とも呼ばれる「樹氷」の存在です。
The snow monsters, or “juhyo,” scientifically known as “ice monsters,” are what made Zao famous worldwide.
真冬の早い日暮れ後、温泉街の近くにある蔵王山麓駅からロープウェイで樹氷高原駅へ。そこで特別仕様の雪上車に乗り込むと、「樹氷幻想回廊」ツアーのスタート。外気温は氷点下ながら、今最もホットな樹氷原ナイトクルージングです。
After an early winter sunset, take a ropeway from Zao Sanroku Station near the hot spring town to Juhyo Kogen Station. From there, board a specially designed snow vehicle to start the “Juhyo Fantasy Corridor” tour. Despite the subzero temperatures, the current highlight is the night cruise through the snowy forest.
出発してすぐに、暗闇のなかから、群居する白い巨人たちの姿が現れます。その様子は、まるで絵本の中、異次元の世界に迷い込んだようでもあり、厳寒の自然がつくり出す造形の不思議さに圧倒されます。
Soon after departure, you’ll see the white giants grouped in the darkness. It’s like stepping into a picture book or an otherworldly dimension, leaving you awed by the mysterious formations created by harsh nature.
樹氷のライトアップは、樹氷高原駅からさらにロープウェイを乗り継いだ地蔵山頂駅周辺でも見学することができます。七色のカクテル光に浮かび上がる樹氷群パノラマ。
大きいもので5mを超し、一体一体が違う表情を見せる樹氷の幽玄さを、こんなに間近に、しかも誰もが安全に体験できるのは、世界で唯一、蔵王だけ。日本夜景遺産にも認定されています。
You can also view the illuminated juhyo near the Jizosancho Station, reached by another ropeway from Juhyo Kogen Station. The panorama of snowy trees lit in a rainbow of cocktail colors is breathtaking. The large ones can exceed 5 meters, and each one has a unique expression. This proximity and safety make Zao the only place in the world where you can experience this. It is also recognized as a Japanese Nightscape Heritage.
東北地方の奥羽山系では、蔵王のほか、八甲田山、八幡平・森吉山、吾妻山などの山域で樹氷を見ることができます。
Besides Zao, you can see juhyo in other parts of the Tohoku region’s Ou Mountains, including Hakkoda, Hachimantai-Moriyoshi, and Azuma.
★蔵王に樹氷ができる理由は3つ。
・シベリアからの強い季節風が多量の過冷却水滴と雪を運ぶこと。
・氷や雪がつきやすい常緑針葉樹アオモリトドマツが自生していること。
・そして、樹氷となる木々が埋没しない適度な積雪量であること。
これらの自然現象が奇跡的に揃い、唯一無二の絶景を生むのです。
There are three reasons why juhyo form in Zao:
1.Strong seasonal winds from Siberia carry large amounts of supercooled water droplets and snow.
2.The native evergreen conifer, Aomori Todomatsu, easily accumulates ice and snow.
3.Adequate snowfall that does not bury the trees that form the juhyo.
These natural phenomena align miraculously to create this unique and spectacular sight.
しかし、マイナス15℃にもなる厳冬期の山頂付近にしかできないため、その姿は長い間ベールに包まれていました。地元ではマタギなどが「雪の坊」と呼んでいたそうですが、樹氷の名でその存在が全国に知られるようになったのは大正時代に入ってからのこと。
However, because juhyo only form near the mountaintop during severe winters, when temperatures can drop to minus 15°C, they were shrouded in mystery for a long time. Locally, they were called “snow boys” by hunters, but the name “juhyo” became widely known nationwide in the Taisho era.
気軽に見学できる環境が整った今でも、天気が不安定な冬は、急に視界が利かなくなって見られない日も。これもまた樹氷をつくり出す自然の厳しさなのです。
Even with the current accessible viewing environment, the unstable winter weather can suddenly obscure visibility. This is another aspect of the harsh nature that creates juhyo.
夜の幻想さに対して、好天に恵まれた青空に映える白銀の樹氷も、雄大さでは引けを取りません。ロープウェイ車窓からの広大な樹氷原の空中ビューに、思わず歓声が上がります。
In contrast to the night’s mystical beauty, the silver juhyo glistening against the clear blue sky on a sunny day is equally magnificent. The vast aerial view of the juhyo forest from the ropeway window will leave you in awe.
昼と夜、光と影。神秘とロマン。その時々で異なる表情を見せるスノーモンスター。
スキーやスノーボードを楽しみながら、古湯と温泉街散策を加えて、蔵王の白い季節が私たちを誘います。
一方で、蔵王は冬以外の3シーズンも爽やかな空気、山の緑、可憐な高山植物、錦綾の紅葉を満喫できるマウンテンリゾートとしても注目されています。登山、トレッキングはもちろん、樹氷高原駅の周辺には、眺望デッキにテラス席、木陰に揺れるハンモックなどのリラクゼーションスペースも登場。
「樹氷の蔵王」は、四季折々の魅力を年々増幅させています。
