  1. Merry Christmas Paul! I don't remember if I Thanked you for the video on how to pass the driving test, hopefully I be able to get to Japan someday.

  2. Having a child in Japan that is going through the normal Japanese system, does that mean your child goes to public schools? Are there any free public high schools in Japan since its not mandatory? As an american, are you having your child go to juku? and how common is it for students to go to juku? While I was teaching in Osaka I would see many students going to juku and leaving around 9 or 10pm but i never got a grasp of the percentage of how many kids go to juku.

  3. I really would like to hear about house building process, cause I'm thinking of either buying an Akiya and fixing it up. Or building from scratch a traditional Japanese old style house.

  4. Same thing happened to me! I was an alternate in 2005, intended to stay a year, then on year turned into two into three into four and I stayed there for seven years. I would've stayed longer but I was fired from my headhunting job, I had too much pride to go back into English teaching, and I couldn't find anything that paid more than an English teacher (including numerous translation jobs) so I did a few medical experiments for money, spent 2 months doing a native checking job for Casio dictionaries (worst job ever) and scooted back home.

  5. an amazing Video, Thanks a lot, I really would love to meet you next time I come to Japan Paul, especially to get some direction regarding Building a house or taking a loan and your experience. unfortunately, it didn't happen in November but I am really looking forward to meet you in 2025

  6. Might have to schedule another whisky 'tasting' stream when you pass your PhD, thanks for sharing you story, 😊

  7. Starting at the 26 minute, 28 second mark and ending at the 26 minute,.31 second mark:

    BOOM !!

That thar on the left is what I call the closest beach to western Tokyo, which used to take 2 hours to get to before the Ken-O Expressway turned it into a 45-minute jaunt as opposed to the 3.5 hours it still takes to get to the white sand beaches of Shimoda…..by train.

Perhaps I will run into you there at that Hiratsuka beach next summer wearing your Speedo?

But don’t expect me to call you “Doc” while wishing you the best of luck and success in achieving your doctorate.

  8. Merry Christmas to you and your family, Paul. Thank you for the lovely scenic drive and for the interesting chat about your life in Japan and why you have stayed on there. Looking forward to your next video.

  9. Thank you for a great VLOG. I really enjoyed hearing your story.
I taught engineering subjects as the University I attended here in Melbourne and it was probably the best job Ive ever had. I really enjoyed being able to relay complex concepts and making them matter to students. I later moved on to teach computer systems in a corporate environment, which paid a lot better but was less fullfilling.
When I discovered my love for Japan, I did apply to be an English teacher with the hope of transitioning to teaching technical subjects…but neither were meant to be. My love for Japan has only grown and I regret not taking some different path to live there. I am hoping I may be able to at some point in my remaining years.

  10. Happy holidays Paul….i wish you the very best in your endeavor to attain a higher position in your teaching career. So glad you’re opening up in this podcast…..I also agree that living in the country is special…..

  11. Your career path reminded me of my own. Not in the way that I worked abroad, but how things come together in ways you never anticipated. That's what I told my children also, you can choose to study one thing, but end up doing something completely different. Don't worry too much how things will turn out.

  12. I am not the first comment this time (I just got my YT account back, lost access to it for weeks ) . I hope you are doing well. I am so close to moving to Japan, and really like watching your videos. They keep me motivated to finish my work in Canada so I can finally come live the dream.

  13. It's always pleasant to hear more about the 'nuts and bolts' of life in Japan. Excellent video, my friend. It really does sound like you've made all the right decisions for yourself and the life you wish to lead. Not everyone can say that. Keep up the fantastic work, dude.

  14. "that extra dimension gives me that extra layer of fulfillment" resonated with me – has been my experience as well. For better or worse I moved back to the US after 7 years in Japan to pursue some opportunities. However I have missed the challenges, novelty, and quality of life of being in Japan. Being in the US or UK (we've spent time in both), has been comparatively boring. We're headed back permanently, having recently purchased a house in Tokyo.

Greatly looking forward to being back (has been > 20yrs since lived there)! We have ~2yrs to go until our daughter graduates …

  15. Good luck with your PhD! It is a great achievement in one's life and you should be really proud of doing it. And even if it fails (which won't happen, I hope) it would still be a significant journey.

  16. Thanks for another great video. I do think it would be worth doing another driving video about the experience building your house, I think alot of your audience want to move to Japan and are looking into property, employment and the various nuances which is why your channel has so much appeal. My family and I went for the first time in October and couldn`t get enough, looking to go again soon and looking at longer term options. We also like the idea of living on the outskirts of the Yokohama area, close to city but not really like you said and the ability to have a car and drive around also. I`m actually surprised the channel doesn`t have alot more subs but I`m sure it will grow much bigger in the future.
