Virtual Tour | Himeji Castle: Architecture of the Outer Gates and Geometric ‘Sama’ Shooting Holes

A number of the former buildings on the site of Himeji Castle survive. This video wanders through the outer gates leading up to the castle, each with a different story. The holes in Japanese castle walls for shooting guns or arrows are called sama (狭間); essentially ‘firing’ or ‘shooting’ holes. Himeji is a great example of a carefully planned castle, in which a vibrant castle town grew around.
