Munakata Taisha is a historic and highly revered Shinto shrine located in Munakata City, Fukuoka Prefecture. It serves as the head shrine for the Munakata region and enshrines the three Munakata goddesses, collectively known as the Munakata Sanjojin. The shrine is composed of three separate shrines: Okitsu Shrine, Nakatsu Shrine, and Hetsu Shrine, dedicated to the protection of maritime navigation and safety.
Okitsu Shrine is located on the sacred island of Okinoshima.
Nakatsu Shrine is situated on Oshima Island.
Hetsu Shrine, the main shrine, is on the mainland and is the most accessible to visitors.
Okinoshima, where Okitsu Shrine is located, is particularly significant. Known as the “Shosoin of the Sea” due to the vast number of National Treasures found on the island, Okinoshima is a sacred place where entry is highly restricted even today. The shrine and the associated islands were recognized as a UNESCO World Heritage site in 2017 under the title “The Sacred Island of Okinoshima and Associated Sites in the Munakata Region”.
The Hetsu Shrine serves as the primary place of worship, where the eldest of the Munakata goddesses, Ichikishimahime-no-Mikoto, is enshrined. People visit Munakata Taisha to pray for safe travel, particularly in relation to the sea, as well as for fishing and maritime trade.
In addition, Munakata Taisha has the Shinpokan (Divine Treasure Hall), which displays many of the valuable artifacts unearthed from Okinoshima. Surrounded by nature, Munakata Taisha provides a serene and sacred atmosphere, making it one of Fukuoka Prefecture’s most significant spiritual and cultural landmarks.
