» ABOUT THE PLACE
Gunkanjima, officially known as Hashima Island, is an abandoned coal-mining facility turned UNESCO World Heritage site. The island was once home to thousands of workers and their families, living in densely packed concrete buildings that now stand as ghostly reminders of Japan’s industrial boom. Its unique battleship-like shape gave it the nickname “Gunkanjima” (Battleship Island).
Visitors can experience guided tours of the island, where they’ll learn about its rise and fall, as well as see breathtaking views of the crumbling structures. Standing amid the ruins, you can feel the echoes of a bygone era when Gunkanjima was a bustling hub of industry.
